You know...I was just thinking about that today. I wonder if Stephen King was referencing swine flu? I didn't get the connection when I read the book because the virus was supposed to be genetically engineered. Of course, I was also in junior high school when I first read it so it probably would have flown right past me anyway.

I could be wrong because it's been awhile since I've read the book, but I believe it was a reference to the police. IIRC, the button had a pig with a policeman's cap. I should check just to make sure, though. Could be a double reference, though - it would be interesting to see.
