annoying

Casting for Australian looking people. Australia had a huge wave of immigrants post-WWII from Italy. The only place I've ever seen more people who look like me than Sydney was in Sicily. But American casting people? Would think I am smoking crack. So weird.

What do they think Australian looking people look like?

[identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded!

Go for it anyway.

So, they think Australians look like Californians? (I mean, their idea of Californians...)

I am noticing a trend here...

Presumably they're thinking along the lines of "descended from Pommie convicts" while overlooking the eclecticism of subsequent immigration?

You attribute brain. Chances are they are thinking "you know, that surfer dude your older sister met on holiday that you really wanted to fuck."

Oh, the hot Chinese guy on Neighbors? Oh, wait.

Reminds me of the fiasco that was/has been the casting of the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie in terms of clueless casting folk.

Canada is about 17% ethnically Italian.
"No, you're English and French. It says so right here in the Big Book Of Hollywood Geography."

So, Sydney is full of beautiful women and good looking men?
Why did my grandfather come from Perth?:(

I seem to remember a decent sized German population, as well as, the Aboriginal people who were there long before any Europeans arrived!

that means, basically, crocodile dundee, yes?

[identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Crocodile Dundee, the late Steve Irwin, or a kangaroo. And the guy off House who's cute but not Wilson.

ah, yes, baby blonde doctor
out of all of those, i would choose to be a kangaroo :D

The new Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, Newcastle. NSW looks entirely Corsican. He is Australian-born.

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.
It's true, we have a mix of more races in one place than almost anywhere else in the world, but Hugh and Nic, and the classic tall, tanned, fit and blond/e type is still the image here.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I would be shocked that if, other than Hugh Jackman, American casting folk would even acknowledge someone with dark hair as "Aussie looking."

Considering that Melbourne has one of the highest Greek populations of any city outside Greece . . .

Don't forget the Irish factor. You can just borrow a lot of actors from movies set in Boston.

Hollywood's stereotyping of my country fills me with pain. Australia may be crazy-xenophobic, but it's still massively multicultural.

No. I say you go anyway. Seriously.
