Like the ersatz chicory coffee that my great grandmother so despised? I think that's a part of the vanished past better left vanished.

You oughta visit The Roasting Plant on Greenwich right by Sixth Avenue, which, iirc, serves siphon coffee from beans dispatched via pneumatic tubes.

I make no promises as to historical veracity

"What are you doing?"

Ianto merely lifted his head from the workbench and gave Gwen a look.

"I am not," he said, returning to where he was adjusting copper piping and -- were those beakers? -- and strange dials, "going to be stuck in the nineteenth century without proper coffee. I can cope with the terrible food and the intolerable hygiene, but not without coffee."

"Where can you get the -- "

"Beau Brummel!" Ianto continued, wrathfully, screwing a clamp shut over a beaker. "He may have inspired generations of fashion but have you encountered the man?"

"Yes, but Iant -- "

"He's repulsive and backwards. This whole century can kiss my arse. I'm building a teasmade next. And if I can get the right chemicals, a proper refrigerator. And a stun gun," he added thoughtfully.

"But what about the beans?" Gwen asked.

"They import them. They're not complete savages. Only mostly. Jack had better find us and get us back through the Rift soon," Ianto added. Then he paused. "How are you holding up, by the way?"

"Well, George Sand invited me to dinner," Gwen said slowly.

"Oh yes?"

"I think it was in the spirit of transvestite solidarity."

"You do look brilliant in a waistcoat," Ianto offered. Something hissed and spat deep in the bowels of the coffee machine he was building. "And in another few days you can ask her to have coffee with us. How's the job?"

"Coppering is coppering," Gwen shrugged. "Nobody's caught on I'm a woman yet. Yours?"

"Dressmaking is dressmaking, I suppose," he replied.

There was a long pause.

"Wait. Does this make me the wife?" he asked finally.

Gwen grinned and kissed him on the cheek. "But you're such a good wife, Ianto."

In the midst of my sinus horror, I forgot to tell you how totally excellent this is and how much I'm obsessed with Jack's reaction to it all when he finally gets them back.

I feel Jack's very first reaction would be to enforce a rule about Gwen always wearing waistcoats from then onwards.

I hope your sinuses are better! *does not poke them to find out*

You could use it for tea. The first coffee maker of which I was aware was such a pot. It lacked the charm of the models people prefer today (being both electric, and opaque.

I have a strange fondness for them, as they are beautiful to watch, but I've never owned one in my coffe drinking life (mostly I use a number 4 melitta cone; or my briki for greek/turkish/armenian/arabic coffee.

They are incredibly complicated to use, though I imagine once one got into the habit it would be easier. And despite the siphon coffee hype, in my experience the taste differential hasn't lived up to its reputation.

Still, it was pretty cool to watch.

I just read sam_storyteller's "I Make No Promises As To Historical Veracity" and was wondering what a steampunky coffeemaker was. Once I read the link to CoffeeGeek, I realized that I've used that sort of coffeemaker several times. My best friend has two -- one made by Cona and another made by Yama, which he got through the Sweet Maria's website. (He's a total coffee geek; he actually roasts his own beans.) I prefer the Cona one with a glass stopper. It's prettier and easier to clean. Plus, no filters!

It really does make superior coffee although I'm sorry that you can't drink any.

The best part is at the end when the coffee is brewed moves into the decanter. It makes this fabulous whooshing sound, and the coffee bubbles and churns. I actually jumped up and down the first time I saw it do that.

Anyway, I feel as though I'm intruding in your journal. Sorry about that. I was enthused.

I am liking living in Denmark, the land of bodum. When I can afford one, I am having one of these. Looks like much more fun that a cafetiere. Thank you for making my coffee-drinking so anticipatory all of a sudden (must save and be thrifty to afford the wonder)
