  • Anti gay marriage ads are now appearing in the New York market. I think I can't watch TV for a while. That said, WPIX has refused to run the add, and they deserve our thanks. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/28/nyregion/28ad.html

  • Major Internet problems at home. Not good.

  • We're still firmly in Mercury retrograde and it is SO ANNOYING. All clusterufucks all the time.

  • I slept for twelve hours last night. I almost feel human.

  • Most annoying phrase I've seen all week: "literary magazine and lifestyle brand."

  • Argh argh argh stupid, stupid. I have Metropolis tickets for the same night as the lesbian pier dance. STUPID STUPID STUPID. ARGGGGGH! Okay, *breathe* Patty & I can sort this when she comes home. But super irritating.

  • On the plus side, about 8 billions years ago I signed up with a rewards program for my bank and forgot about it. Now I have enough points to get a $150 check from them or about $200 in gift cards from various stores. SCORE. I should probably get the gift cards to stores I use anyway -- practical stuff, like Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond or even the drug store.

  • Must consider what's next from Duchess. Shirts? Pinstripe (yes, fuck you all, I'm totally going there, but iz not a cosplay thing) suit? Grey suit (yes, fuck you all, I'm also totally going there and that's a tiny bit a cosplay thing, yes, fine, grrr)? or tux (which I will do in time to have for cruise)?

  • Yet more new Torchwood promo shots. Happy happy.

yeah, I've had more than my fair share of communication and transportation fail due to the retrograde. It can go now. Really.

and you're right...that *is* an annoying phrase. What was the context of that?

A new magazine is launching. Buy the first issue, get involved to an exclusive "white party". The whole thing was wanktastic.

It means a party where everyone wears white. In this case, it was the mag trying to be cool and Truman Capote-like. To me their jsut a gay circuit thing, that involve as little clothing as possible and a lot of hunky men.

You be a foreigner for a second, and you read the words 'an exclusive "white party"'. Given the weird climate in your country (PA newspaper inadvertently runs ad calling for assassination of Obama http://bit.ly/3PnUc)it's ...still perfectly embarrassing!

Oh, yeah, caught that story via ontd_p.... dear grief, I don't know what disgusts me more, that some group wanted to call for the assassination of a president, or that whoever ran ads was sufficiently history-illiterate not to get that this was the thrust of the ad! And yes, "white party" was similarly baffling to this expat.

What I find interesting is that I know a LOT of people who are Republican, Christian, Conservative, etc. Not a single one of them has ever expressed to me the belief that gay marriage is in any way wrong or that it should even be a question.

Granted, they probably also know where I stand on the issue, and probably don't want to wind up with me wearing their ribcages as hats.

I suspect that there is also a sort of reverse Bradley Effect at work. Lots of people in the above categories have no problem with SSM personally, but are in the habit of keeping that thought to themselves, because of the other Republican, Christian, Conservative, etc. they know.
For whatever it's worth, at least 70% of Canadians who opposed SSM are opposed to changing things back, because that would be crazy! You can't do that to people! That would be insane!
Equal rights are going to happen, and most people are going to learn to roll with it, as they always do. The deranged minority that makes all the noise are destined to be unhappy.
As Robin Tyler pointed out on Canadian TV the morning after, no civil rights movement has ever failed.

I work for a Canadian company and spend a lot of time with them and consider many of our Canadian employees good friends. One thing that was surprising to me is that so many of them were able to differentiate their personal whatever issues with homosexuality with the fact they thought SSM was the way to go. That doesn't mean small town Canada in the backcountry of BC always is the most considerate in their language choices, but damn all of them said you can't deny civil rights just because i don't like it.

It impressed me. Since I live in the bible belt and we banned SSM two years ago. To see people who can separate their view from the legal system was impressive. We just don't have that in Memphis.

Yeah,eh? My born again conservative Christian kid sister is always torn between voting Green or NDP( Socialist!) Labour or Ecology? Both so important!
And my Mormon High School teacher told our class, I don't care what you believe after the year is over, but first you have to pass a test on how evolution works.
The one time a provincial parliament found itself without any opposition members, the government panicked. How can you govern without opposition?

Completely different history->completely different political culture. Most Canadians would agree George III was a pretty decent King, and would also agree to most of the Declaration of Independence.

I am lucky enough to have been able to travel and live outside of the country and so I always got different history -> different culture and that those differences are good and bad sometimes but never just good or bad. I think because my North American experience was sort of limited I didn't realize the really big difference between Canadians and Americans. Some good, some bad.

But mostly I sort of love them.

I think WPIX is clearly awesome.

Since my family is in a different situation than your family is, when the anti-SSM ads ran here a few years ago (and a few months ago, and during the election) we found it was actually a really good object lesson to use with Thomas. We watched them and then talked about what they claimed in them and asked him what he thought and answered questions. We were at least able to expose them for what they were and I felt like I was at least getting to send my son into the world without being corrupted by the Bible Belt Worldview.

The NOM ads always confuse me. Like, the most frightening thing they can say is that, oh no, your kids might learn about homosexuality in schools? Hell, I expect them to make up grand lies about how the world will be doomed and such. Though, I suppose it speaks volumes that some people do find it terrifying that their kids will learn about homosexuality. Which is so damned bizarre.

The TW promo shots and interviews have made me very excited for series 3 :)
