sundries

  • Rain, rain and more rain. It's finally supposed to be sunny again tomorrow, which is good as I think the plants are getting a little bored of this. The buds on the pepper have separated -- there are four, so hopefully there will be some interesting activity there soon. We're at three growing tomatoes and those other buds on the zebra, so hopefully we'll get some more new tomatoes going on around the end of next week. The other tomatoes are still too young for buds, and I'm picking up the last of the plants tomorrow.

  • The dress from Trashy Diva came in. It fits (thank god -- I wasn't actually sure my measurements were still the same) and it's much more a delicate thing than I had envisioned. It's less a startlet thing and more very thirties, very fragile, very (for those of you who have read the thing), dare I say it, Annie. Well, fuck, that's interesting. Maybe slicking back my hair and with some dark lipstick I can tart it up. Either way, I need to get some random stuff for my hair for it, because current haircut (which I still hate) is way too butch for it.

  • Which brings us to this weekend. Duchess Clothier is in town, and will be at Wit's End tomorrow and is having a fitting/sales thing on Sunday. I'm going to both. I own one suit. And I've got this new dress. And I'm all filled with consternation about it. I suppose I'll just have to take it as my mood comes on, but I need to get underpinnings for the dress, in case I do decide to wear it tomorrow. It may be lined, but it still needs a slip and a very 1950s bra. Also, New Yorkers, who is coming to what?

  • Patty gets home Monday or Tuesday (OMG, her family and planning -- hopefully we will learn things from each other as time goes on -- certainly, I think I am becoming more zen about this sort of stuff) and then her mom is staying around through Barn Dance!

  • Hey, my IMDB profile has been updated enough that there's now a schedule of when you (if you're in the States) can see me on your TV. That's a little weird. There is, of course, no need to go out of your way, as most of these things are brief if I'm visible at all. However, I do get residuals from Revolutionary Road so if you want to show it the love when the DVD release happens, I won't stop you.

  • The new Doctor Who companion has been chosen. She's cute, but, OMG, it's all so young. They better play up the Doctor's age, body aside. I'm just saying.

  • Is BBCAmerica really calling Torchwood fans "Torchies"? Really? But hey -- new online content: http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/262/index.jsp and the new trailer is AMAZING: (http://community.livejournal.com/torch_wood/4846412.html#cutid1)

  • Welcome, new people. Sometimes, I write smart stuff. Sometimes I write porny fanfic or talk about my illegal fire-escape garden. If you've got questions, feel free to ask 'em now. Meanwhile, I do actually read (or at least skim) my whole f-list, although I comment sporadically. It does take me a while to get to know names/icons/stories/etc. so if you'd like to introduce yourself here, you can do that too.

  • Just booked my WriterCon flights, which now means I've finished all con logistics for the rest of the year. That's AWESOME.

Looking at her and mentally placing her side by side with Matt Smith, I suddenly felt way too old for this show. I find I need some visible crow's-feet lately or I can't stay interested.

I want to go to Wit's End, but I've got the one-two punch of broke and not having a thing to wear, so I may sit this one out.

Even Catherine Tate's age getting treated as some sort of novelty for a companion, though, wasn't a good sign.

    Very true.

Although they did move older and older with the companions. 19, mid 20s, 30s...

I don't know why I find it so cool that I can find you on IMDB, but I do. I mean, I already knew that you were all professional-like, but now it's official. Your acting is srs bzns. XD

I'm feeling bizarrely optimistic about the new companion. I was expecting to be all bummed (TOO YOUNG! TOO PRETTY! TOO FEMALE! WHINE!) but for some reason when I saw her picture and it really just clicked. I still hope that she's not from present day London, though.

Torchies? Are you serious? That sounds like a nickname for space-herpes or something.

She also was in the Pompeii episode, apparently.

As one of the Sibylline Sisters, right? She did well in that, if I remember correctly, though it's not really enough to judge by. I hope we get an interview with her soon. I'd like to learn more about her, as an actress.

...maybe a big red fake flower behind one ear, for the dress/hair? Hide the bad part and give it some vamp.

Somebody else-LJ commented along the lines of "They'd better play up the Doctor's real age," with an implied "or else I'll stop watching." This is the second transition to a new Doctor that I've seen "realtime", as it were, and I'm very anxious about it. I never had any doubts about Tennant, but this new guy... so young. And trendy? Hrrm. ANXIOUS.

It doesn't help that I thought Tennant was delicious from the beginning, while this new guy... um, how do I put it kindly... has quite a bit of forehead, doesn't he? *cough*

Your IMDB profile is so cool. Ahaha, I love how I link people to your posts all the time but never really comment on your entries. Not remotely a new person, but I'm reading! Hi!

From our respective 37-year-old POVs, both Matt and Karen are really damn young, and there is a slight fear on my part that the show will skew toward a younger audience when it restarts in 2010. I'm recalling the last time DW went after a much younger audience in the 1980s, which started off well with Peter Davison and his young companions, but really turned sour and painful during the first half of Colin Baker's run primarily due to horrid writing and acting. Steven Moffat has consistently been one of the best writers throughout the show's revival, so I have hopes that in spite of the return of leggings and shoulder pads, there won't be a full 80s revival going on.

I'm a huge fan of Eccleston as an actor, so that transition was huge anxiety for me and then it turned out that Ten was really _my_ Doctor. Who knew? I'm not too worried about Matt Smith. I am worried about Moffat's writing, as I tend to love or hate his episodes.

"This is the second transition to a new Doctor that I've seen 'realtime,' as it were, and I'm very anxious about it."

New Doctor, new companion, new producer, new writers, (apparently) new TARDIS interior--I've never seen a "live" transition between show producers before, but it was usually startling enough a change just in old-show reruns that this should be interesting, if nothing else.

"I thought Tennant was delicious from the beginning, while this new guy...um, how do I put it kindly...has quite a bit of forehead, doesn't he? *cough*"

He's...er...well, his face does stand out a bit, that's for certain. ;-) I just really want to see what sort of costume he's getting and whether it complements The Forehead or just makes it look ridiculous.

Heh, I grok that. Everybody talks about Moffat having written "Blink" - what other episodes has he written? I could just go look it up, of course. ;p

(apparently) new TARDIS interior - o reeeeeally? Oooooh. Intrigued! Hopefully they'll at least mention that there's more to the inside of the TARDIS than that one big room. And yeah, I hadn't added up all the changes... yikes. We'll see. I will keep my fingers crossed! *eeee*

He wrote The Doctor Dances/The Empty child, which was masterful. And while I find Blink very smart, I don't have the love for it that so many people do.

Because Jack is queer, people always forget he was Moffat's creation, not RTD's.

Also Girl in the Fireplace with Mme de Pomadour, and the Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead two parter.

I think he's a genius, personally, especially with the whole time travel twisty thing.
