I think (imho) that it ties in with an earlier post of the OP's about how being female means one is much more "public property", and therefore that decisions one makes about one's own body are much more likely to be judged by people (of both genders) at large.

Being the morbid bastard that I am, I had to check out the reaction of Concerned Women For America (http://www.cwfa.org/articles/17083/MEDIA/life/index.htm). It's a ripe model of passive-aggressiveness, expressing such shock but essentially saying that Tiller is in hell and that this whole thing wouldn't have happened if the man had been thrown into jail.

Oh, and here's Mark Shea (http://markshea.blogspot.com/2009/05/god-have-mercy-on-both-victim-and.html) calling Tiller a "kindred spirit" with the person who shot him. Then Shea frets that the government will throw him in jail for some reason.
