update on krxq situation

http://glaadblog.org/2009/06/05/update-nissan-wont-renew-krxq-advertising-contract/

8 advertisers have now pulled their stuff from the station in light of this mess.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] selasphorus for the update.

That's absolutely wonderful news. Hopefully this well get those two vile idiots fired.

My question is, what is the FFCs guidelines towards advocating violence?

While they used an 'imaginary' child as an example, the whole discussion was brought up by a real child.

damn, i used to know FCC regulations backward and forward

[identity profile] xtricks.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they find a gazillion dollars for a clearly accidental and momentary nudity issue but a half-hour talk show advocating violence against children the could be (very arguably) defined as troubled gets a pass?

Does it fall under free speech protections?

[identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
they've changed a few things recently (since i studied, anyway) so i'm not sure what it would fall under now

[identity profile] klwalton.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
The FCC is fangless and it sucks. Just sayin'.

Woo-HOO! Here's hoping the rest follow suit.

Only to say that they are equal opportunity offenders and it's really just a joke. The apology, if anything, made the situation worse.

I have to say that I am very impressed with how swiftly these large companies have reacted. Thanks for posting about it again.

ok, i made the mistake of actually listening to the audio of this

holy shit

[identity profile] dramedy.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped by Chipotle for lunch because of this. well, and fajita burritos, but this factored in!! :D :D

also, now my desire for a Nissan Versa has increased. :>

I had to close the audio file of the show after a few minutes. I couldn't take it.

But I did write thank-yous to some of the advertisers, and will do so for the others that have since pulled their ads. And buy myself some Snapple.

YAY! Thanks for sharing, this is great to hear.

I fail, entirely...

[identity profile] thenowhere.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
...at understanding how people that bigoted can still exist. I just don't understand that point of view. I can't imagine it. I can't hear it without becoming confused and bewildered and hopelessly angry. It's like listening to someone try to argue that the sky is made of pea soup, and fish can make lightbulbs grow from their fins.

Hooray for Nissan, et al. Let's hope KRXQ fires the morons; it's that, or torches and pitchforks for the angry mobs who deserve to see heads roll for such obvious hate spread all over national radio.

AWEsome!

This is incredibly heartening. I couldn't even comment on the earlier posts, I was so upset.

While it is commendable of the companies listed, it still suggests that the only effective moral guardians of the airwaves are advertisers, and so long as so many of them are invested in the hetero-normative complex that can't be a good thing. Does the US have an equivalent of OfCom?

[identity profile] stephl.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been e-mailing all the sponsors who pulled their advertising to thank them, and I've gotten very nice responses from Chipotle and Wells Fargo. That's heartening, but I'm still waiting for the DJs to be fined/fired. I realize, given the state of shock-jock radio, that I'm waiting for something that will never happen.

Still, I'm glad that the radio station is losing serious advertising money over this.

Rob Williams declares failure (http://glaadblog.org/2009/06/07/update-krxq-radio-host-rob-williams-declares-failure/#more-9664).
