I need a cheap, reliable, no drama hosting service that will makes things as uncomplex as possible for me in terms of registering a domain name and allowing me to update my site via FTP whenever, and in terms of not dinging me on transfer fees. I Google, and 8-billion things come up, and it's too much for my poor little brain.

A friend of mine runs johncompanies.com - a ultrasimple hosting svc, cheaper than most due to their colo - but they are not a registrar. I can ask for a FOAF discount for you. My net radio/tv station has run there for the last 2 years w/out a hitch.
