  • Patty comes home this week!

  • So at my fitting on Sunday, I also need to talk serious business to Seyta about my tux. Which, aside from making lots of decisions, basically means I need her to talk me down from my "I'm afraid I'll look like a waiter" fears. As if, in something that's a) $$$$, b) custom, and c) explicitly from the first half of the 20th century in cut and style.

  • I think I just solved the major structural block on Kali and I's fantasy novel project. Now we just have to solve one key plot issue, and I think we can finally fucking write this. (YES, YES, we figured it out, WE UNBROKE THE NOVEL!). Oh Greg and Val, I have missed you! Meanwhile, I think I am getting more EtGB from her today, which means we're getting closer to you all getting Chapter 3, but we're probably still a couple of weeks away. I'd like to have it out before Dragon*Con, although we'll see.

  • Article on gay men being attacked, beaten and murdered in Iraq.

  • From the departments of WTF?!?!?, Get The Fuck Off My Team, and This Is Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: someone compares watching Torchwood: Children of Earth to getting raped. Actual rape survivors tell her off (this is seriously triggery) but get told in response they just don't love Jack and Ianto enough. While there is some widespread speculation that this person is a troll: 1) that doesn't make this less revolting and 2) they've had the journal for over a year, so I actually think they are sincere in their batshittery.

  • From the department of embarrassing enough to make me scream: brief cover email to the personal essay I sent in over the weekend? It's one late-night giant typo of incoherence. Luckily it's only a sentence and doesn't really matter, but I FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT.

  • Photos from the most recent issue of Torchwood Mazagine. Excuse me, I'm having a moment.

  • A campaign has been launched to get a posthumous apology issued to Alan Turing, brilliant mathematician and WWII-era codebreaker, who received an OBE for his efforts. His conviction for homosexuality in 1952 effectively ended his career, and two years later he committed suicide at the age of 41. The laws under which he was convinced were repealed in 1967. Over 1,200 people have now signed the petition for an official apology for Turing's prosecution. If you are a British citizen or resident, please consider doing so.

  • Men in Afghanistan have won the right to starve their wives if they do not acquiesce to them sexually.

  • Women in combat aren't causing the collapse of civilization -- rather, they're making the army work better, even if all sorts of rules have to be circumvented to get them where they're needed.

  • [livejournal.com profile] estelofimladris, who in my head I refer to as "West Coast Jack" (I'm East Coast Jack), just posted these fucking fish and they are MESMERIZING. You could disable nations by getting them to stare at these things (click your mouse to feed them).

  • Oh, there will probably be more later as stuff comes to me.

Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, which is active in Sadr City, has joined in the attacks and defends its actions as a way to stop the "feminization" of Iraqi men, the report said.

Oh, no, "feminine" traits. How horrible. How terrifying.

Ah, she also wrote the 'whore of cardiff' story so, yes, is not a troll and also, kinda nuts.

and funny but not, when I tried to go to the link on gaybashing in iraq, my microsoft EX explained that it had encountered a fatal error and had to close. Clearly somethings are not meant for my eyes.

Oddly, in some perverse way, I love that the "whore of Cardiff" story exists, mainly because it was the genesis for my con masquerade idea for "Team Torchwood Fanfic Cliches" which so far has: mpreg!Jack, WhoreofCardiff!Gwen and Vampire!Ianto. I just haven't come up with anything really brilliant for Tosh or Owen yet.

Tosh would have to be invisible!Tosh because she's pretty much ignored in stories of that sort and Owen would be Ianto's (platonic) knight defender because in about half of those sorts of stories he ends up taking care of woobie!Ianto and/or yelling at Jack for neglecting him.

Oh, and mpreg!Jack totally has to have one of those 'baby inside' with the arrow, T-shirts

For reasons that totally have to do with a certain project we are all working on, and what I am specifically doing in said project, I LOL.

    OH IF ONLY.

There will just always be come batshit crazy people out there. The numbers may rise with the increase in population, but the percentage never changes.

And they can now get access to the internet which means we get to read/hear from more of them.

No, the indices for just plain batshit insane is a cultural variable that also varies over time.

I couldn't get through the story about Iraq (which I read via the BBC). Homophobia in the Middle East, in a War-Zone, is just too much for me right now.
    Life is not mending dammit!

I can't get over the WTF!?!?!?! and O_O of that stupid, stupid, stupid girl/woman/I just don't know if this person qualifies as human, wrote. Really? Really, Really?!?! Gah!!!

Yeah, I heard about the fourth point via the BBC (horrible) and the fifth point via [livejournal.com profile] misscam on my Dreamwidth circle. As you say, revolting and crazy. I just hope this is one lunatic who doesn't accrue too many approving comments, because the cluelessness is abominable.

That chick needs heavy medical attention.

There was a time when I got really pissed, almost like that, about TV shows -- you get invested, I get it -- but eventually as I grew up I came to a realization. Even stuff that's "official canon" is written by human beings like anyone else. There can be lapses in judgment and quality.

I began to treat the whole idea of canon as an illusion. I have my own "personal canon" which typically mirrors the official material, but I can omit anything that I think blows ass, and include anything from books or fanfic, or what have you.

In my little world, Trip from Enterprise is still alive, 90% of the Star Wars prequels never happened, and Scotty stole an old Constitution class starship from a museum to save Ambassador Spock from Romulus.

(Owen and Tosh are still dead, sadly, because I kinda felt that was classy and tragic material. (Especially with Owen.))

Seriously though, this stuff is all supposed to be fun fantasy escapism. Nobody is saying you can't get pissed at something dumb, but there's a fine line between a passionate debate and certifiably obsessive crackpottery.

    $50 says she's 15.

Oh, and Kirk sure as FUCK didn't die falling off a bridge. The Ashes of Eden books are awesome in regard to fixing that. :)

Owen's death was the fuck exceptional. Then again, Burn Gorman = serious acting chops. Damn.

I get really, really invested in stuff too, but it's less about "damn you writers!" and more about how I feel.

At least there's the lovely fact that in the Whoniverse in particular there actually isn't any such thing as a single, solid canon:

It has long been my opinion that you're supposed to superficially look like a waiter when you wear a tuxedo. And that forces you to assert your individuality (and your station, I suppose) with your poise and charm. It might be just me, but if I'm talking to someone in a tuxedo and am aware of the fashion, then that person is Doing It Wrong.

Skimming back through the journal's entries, it kind of feels to me as though the whole thing is written with tongue firmly in cheek, though not necessarily well or appropriately. It's hard for me to believe someone could bear that particular intensity of emotion about how much sex assorted male characters are having on-screen, and the boyfriend thing from last August is really disturbing.

There are just too many horrible throwaway lines for me to be willing to believe this all comes from one person who honestly believes it. Which may just make me too optimistic.

    Your point #1 certainly stands.

One of these days I expect to see a SNL-style skit on the Beeb featuring John Barroman who screams "It's just a TV show, dammit; IT'S JUST A TV SHOW!!!1!"

    But I'm weird like that...

..Not that this is difficult this week. And not that I'm not glad for the news updates about the middle east. Still.

So hard to not blast off re: 'it was like rape.' If she's not gonna hear it from the very eloquent and powerful responses thus far, she's not gonna get it period.

Isn't the best thing to do to people like call-me-connie to ignore them and let them die out in obscurity? Do they get what they want (drama of some sort or another) by being linked to? Also do they represent fandom, or just a disturbed individual?
