Ocean Grove

An octosquid-flapper-mermaid mural in one of the gutted buildings on the Asbury Park boardwalk.

The old carousel house in Asbury Park. Now home to The Full Monty and random gun shows.

bird!

wooden pylons I initially mistook for a graveyard.

Meant 'n' More! Seriously, how could I not photograph the Meat 'n' More?

Ocean Grove Fishing Club on the pier

Boat out at sea. Yay zoom lens.

Remnants from the Asbury Park attractions can now be found in this restaurant supply store. It's creepy.

Decrepit kids ride outside of restaurant supply store.

The mermen of tackiness! (I tried to shop for some of you all, but it was closed!)

More mermen of tackiness!

I love the... flapper mermaid? flaptopus? in the second shot. Looks like a lovely weekend.

Is it horrible that my first thought was "Octapussy"?

Lovely photos. Those Butchy mermen are cute! 't would appear that fun was had and good memories were made.

Did they have the full Village People assortment of mermen? I see the cop and the Indian chief...

I didn't see a construction worker.

Oh, wow. bummer they were closed.
Wonder if they have an online presence...

invoking Google-fu...

Oh, dear lord, I found them:

oh, and there *is* a construction worker.

Hahahahaah, I had a feeling they would surface on Google, although Patty made it very clear that she's disappointed that she didn't have to witness me purchasing the things.

Oh god, that apron! Over the mer-tail! I am humbled by the sheer unbridled absurdity. The flapper mermaid's wonderful, though.

(Can't resist footnoting: Bird is a crow, flowers are petunias.)

Also, that site doesn't have the leather daddy one, which I do have a pic of, I'll have to add that later.

So they do have a construction worker.

That would be an epic Christmas tree display...

Similar, but the one I saw was sorta different. Also, there were foot high statue versions in the store, but I couldn't get a clear shot.

The Asbury ones are so sad. We spent every summer going to the carousel and the other rides and stuff. I grew up in Bradley Beach.

I've seen those tacky mermen before, I can't decide if they're awesome or hideous.

You could put some on the fire escape to scare away marauding beasts!

It's nice to see the old carousel house is still there, but sad that the carousel is not. It was a cool place when I was a kid. With some of the old style arcade machines.

Oh my gods, I totally want a tacky merman.

This is yet more proof I need to make a trip to the East coast sometime in the next twelve months.

We've been talking about doing a beach weekend thing with a bunch of people next year, once we know Patty's dig schedule. Just, FYI.

Oh dear.

No idea what the money element in the money/time mix is going to look like yet (I can't think past November), but I have also never been to a proper beach with an ocean involved. This may need to happen.

Dude! DUDE! Then yes yes yes. I'm guessing it would be around this time of year. There are a lot of small B&B's where we were, and Kali and her partner and Patty and I have talked about doing a couples weekend, but I've also started thinking about what would happen if we just rented out a whole 6-room B&B for people we like for a weekend.

Hmm. I'd probably have to choose between this and D*C, but man. I could be so up for that. Sand in unwelcome places!

Well, there are a lot of variables (including the "if I can get access to the house that my racist uncle currently owns because he happens to be going away that weekend....")

Well, look at it this way. This is no madder than me and Mouse joking that I should find someplace and host Makeout*Con or something here in Missouri.

"What's it for?"

"Makeouts, I guess."
