I think so. Having been the victim of out of control, hateful neighbors in the past, I think that's the true weird factor in the story. It could have been siblings or two hetro couples or just rommates and you'd still have a crazy guy trying to poison someone's curry.

I think it's the numeric thing that makes it great. Like 1 crotchety old man, 2 newly weds and a three-legged cat would have worked just as well.
