The whole thing reminded me of something someone said to me when I was freaking out about Sam Mendes signing the Polanski petition. I'd made the mistake of thinking the American Beauty plotline about the girl who pretended to be sexually aware and active but was really a virgin was about the girl. It was just a plot device related to the guy who wanted to do her.
