headshots

Enough of you are in the biz or otherwise adjacent, so....

I'm really looking at doing new headshots. It must be done. And I'd like to do it before the end of the year (because I'd like to have them before I'm in LA, and the beginning of the 2010 is all travel all the time).

Commercial shot, legit shot -- probably want color for both this time (my current shot was done by Jinsey Dauk, whose work I like better in B&W than in color), and for them to be landscape (so more like a film screen, since that's mainly what I do). Ideally, also want someone who can deal with my gender-bendy stuff and do a third shot that's me in masculine garb, affect, as I'd like to have that for the occasions it does come up (and it does).

Photogs who won't try to make me pretty in a way I am not are very important (I hear a lot of "let's try to do a Julia Roberts thing with you" -- no, let's not). I'm striking, and I have large features. Minimizing those just puts me in competition with other women who actually look like that; I'm not demure and I'm not interested in faking it. I thought Jinsey did a fantastic job of capturing my poise and sorrow and humor, but I need something a little tougher and a little louder this time, because I'm a little tougher and a little louder this time.

Anyone have any NYC recs for me?

My best friend is a headshot photographer. This is her website. The current headshot I have, which constantly gets me "You know, you are the only person who came into this call who actually looks like their headshot, I love that" comments, is from her. Other pros - she's a lovely person, inexpensive, and will not be thrown by doing gender-bendy stuff. In fact, I suspect she might enjoy it quite a bit.

My husband, [livejournal.com profile] midnightstation. Seriously. Sadly, his website is not fully updated, but he's excellent, a sensitive listener, and loves Torchwood :)

I think you'd be a good match. I will send him over here to see what it is you are looking for and if he'd be interested too.

Man, I wish I were good at photography...but I only paint and draw, so that's the only thing I could offer you, and it would take a while. :-P However, if you're up for it, I could look at a whole bunch of pictures of you and try to compose a free-form gender-bendy portrait with you wearing masculine clothes. I'm kind of picturing this outfit, but more tailored and grown-up looking and probably without the musket. :-P

(I won't lie...I could just be thinking of myself here, since that is TOTALLY the outfit I wish I could wear. Don't mind me.)

End of story...I don't know any photographers in NYC off the top of my head. I don't know a lot of photographers, period. I wish I could help out more.

I have absolutely no contributions to you question, but I did want to say that your old head shots are lovely, and I'll always love the picnic picture. Also, I have lip envy. ;)

I hope you find a good photographer!

Jordan Matter, hands down. I really wish I'd gone with him this time around, actually. He's expensive, but he's remarkable. I've worked with him as an art model and he's a helluvah nice guy. He photographs a LOT of dancers and people with interesting faces. I would recommend, honestly, getting some full-lengths done in your suits as well, both for self-promotional purposes and for acting work.

Both times I've gone with Douglas Gorenstein, who is cheaper and terrific . . .but I think doesn't always know what to do with people who aren't "pretty" (I think you know what I mean by that).

Yow. Really expensive. But those are also the first color shots I've looked at and liked.

Haha. (Not really.) His website is blocked for me. Must be because of his book. (I'm looking for a photographer for a relative.)

I've dropped him an email. Also, I feel really glad you think I'm not crazy to want some suit photos done for this as well. It's a very specific thing, but sometimes a very specific thing is needed.

I think your pictures are the kind that make little creative explosions go off in people's brains so I think that are called *Boom!Headshot*s :P

I enjoyed working with Jeffrey Hornstein, who I thought did the best of the portfolios I looked through at bringing out the character in character actors. He was also fairly inexpensive within the range I was looking at at the time.
