[personal profile] rm
Step One

Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it. Once a wish has been granted, it will be crossed off my list.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

In no particular order beyond the order in which I thought of them:

1. Plants vs. Zombies fanfiction. Not smutty, please, that's too traumatizing. But Patty and I are obsessed with the game and the music video with the little singing sunflower, and it would be brilliant. I want plant social drama and war strategy!

2. I am never, ever going to get around to writing the Torchwood Harlequin AU where Ianto is a jewel thief and Jack is the less than respectable target of his crimes. Please, please be insane enough to write this for me?

3. Donate some money to Lambda Legal. I do, several times a year, and they don't suck and work on a lot of critical issues well beyond equal marriage rights including an inclusive ENDA, rights for LGTBQ teens in their schools, parenting and adoption cases, etc.

4. If you're an HP fan or know one consider buying my book for yourself or someone else for the holidays.

5. Patty and I are, as you know, going on a cruise in early January. Shipboard credits (which I believe you can buy in increments as low as $10) are our very special friend. If you want to actually do this, you need to know the following:
We're sailing on the Noordam on Jan 4, the booking is under Maltese and the booking number is 9XWNGG and the URL for all this nonsense is at: https://book.hollandamerica.com/shop/onboardLogin.do

6. Shop in a way that directly impacts your community -- buy your holiday gifts from small businesses, artisans, etc. If you're going to shop at the big stores, try to remember the creative people that you know and buy their books, films, video games, etc.

7. Gluten-free croissants. If you can figure out how to get 'em and get them to me, this is HUGE. In fact, European LJ'ers you stand a better chance (I know for a fact these exist in both French and Swiss supermarkets) -- if you can find these in your local markets and are willing to take the time to pack and send, just tell me, and I'll pay for the things and the cost. I just want access.

8. If you see something say something, to quote the crappy anti-terrorism campaign in the subway. Lots of my friendslist is conflict averse. Believe it or not, so am I. But I would consider it a huge gift if next time you see/hear/read someone saying something racist or sexist or homophobic or just plain bullying because fandom is eating itself again or people on the Internet are asshats, that you take a second to politely call them on it, and say, hey, That is Not Okay.

9. Pocket squares. It's been on my shopping to do list, like FOREVER, but it never happens.

10. I've continued to make improvements on my Jack cosplay coat (which, I have to confess is my actual winter coat when it's really, really cold, because it's the warmest thing I own). I've found the right buttons (so I'll need to replace those again), but what I haven't found the energy to make or locate are the correct rank slides.

[livejournal.com profile] j_bkl and I were singing the Plants vs. Zombies song all weekend.

I'm also happy to report that I was able to perform #6 for a large gift for a very special someone. I do that kind of shopping whenever possible, and not just this time of year.

8 - Yeah. Yeah. Been doing that more and more, these past few years especially. I think I'm inspired to be a better human being on that front by my partner being a loud-mouthed activist sort. See my LJ for details on my current big project, if you like. (Friendslocked because I want to be able to release it under my real name at some point.)

Not all that bizarre, actually, and several are do-able enough even in this economy (as a Small Artisan I'm particularly approving of #6 ;) ) -- I have to save most of my spoons RE #8 for not throttling my relatives over turkey, this time of year, but I'll try to be a bit more up-front about calling them on their Not Okayness when next (not if, alas) it should come up.

(So far as your request that we post links to our own lists, I'm afraid mine looks kind of banal and unfocused in comparison, dammit...)

When I first wore them I heard them referred to as such, but pocket square seems to be the more popular term today; probably so people don't think you're supposed to blow your nose in them.

They're the fancy bits of cloth you might see men [persons wearing "male" clothing?] wearing decoratively in the pocket in the outer left breast of their jackets.

I got your 3, 6 (being an artist, I also make a fair amount of my gifts, too), and 8, but I need to work on the execution of 8, particularly as you specified "politely", and it seems even when I try polite, I get accused of thinking I'm better and trying to 'school them'. :/

From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Well, I think we'll often get accused of that, sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly. And I have a hell of a temper myself, so the "politely" is as much as reminder to myself as anyone else.

But I know more army surplus and coin shops that deal in medals and rank slides and things than you can shake a stick at.

I get my groceries delivered, and my supermarket do a possible gluten-free croissant that I could easily add on and ship off to you - but I say 'possible gluten free' because they're in the their 'free from...' range, but the product has no picture and the details don't say anything remotely useful. Their website: not so great. I emailed and asked and will let you know if they turn out to be gluten-free.

They are expensive though - about $1.50 per croissant, plus postage, whatever that may be.
