Instead we watched the end of Merlin, S2 (god, what a frustrating, incoherent waste of a series -- it has so much potential and it just doesn't know what it wants to be or care about creating a coherent world no matter how wonky and anachronistic -- note, I'm not asking for any sort of "accuracy" just for internal consistency).
Then we watched two episodes of Buffy which I continue to love. But wow that episode on cyberdating demons was so 90s it hurt. Jacked in?!?!?!?! Oi. It also had a lot of elements that reminded me of The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit from Doctor Who.
One of the things that amuses me about Buffy is spending a lot of time thinking about what the fandom must be like. At one point I turned to Patty and said, "People get that Gilles is, well, Gilles, right? They aren't writing lots of terrible fic about him wearing leather pants and being a dom are they? Because in Harry Potter fandom, that's what would happen."
Soon we can start Being Human.

I'm a late comer, too. I fell in love with Buffy the summer Deathly Hallows came out and Buffy was such a balm. As I was mourning the multiple losses of HP, I had a new love to distract me. And in many ways, it's so much more satisfying.
It's not to diminish HP in any way but I've got way more cannon in the Buffyverse to work with. Plus characters I like a lot more than I like some of the characters in HP.
There's great fanfic out there for Buffy. Just hold off reading it until you've finished the series. I know that's a lot to ask but, these days, all the fic is jumbled together and it's hard to find the early stuff. And there are spoilers a plenty in the later stuff. Stuff you want to smack you upside the head when you're watching the show, not be confused by in fanfic.

There's more to Giles than meets the eye...

PS - are you starting Being Human from the beginning, or just the current, second series?

You have the pilot, right? Otherwise I'm sure that could be arranged.

I just recently started watching Being Human...wound up REALLY liking it, and was constantly amused to see characters pop up that had been in Torchwood or Doctor Who.

He's amazing.
Though I never really identified with him per say... I was too young (I watched it when it first aired when I was 12).
I'm glad you're enjoying Buffy. I haven't been in the fandom for a long time, largely because Doctor Who and Torchwood have filled the hole Buffy/Angel left when they ended and unlike most, I'm not a fan of the comic continuations - I suppose I should give them a shot, but Joss just isn't that good a comic book writer, imo.

Oh, my gosh! I forgot! There is a classic AU Giles fic with leather/motorcycle!Giles.
Well, there were several Buffy/Giles fics with the subtext of Giles being kind of subby.
And a series with a toppy Giles/(redacted)--set after season 5, no spoilers unless you want them.
If there was any stereotypyed leather!Giles, I missed it.

I read this an hour ago, and I'm still grinning. :)
Enjoy Season 2!

there is genderfail in our livejournal

In the Tween boys and grooming products article, there was at least one very hopeful note: "in a recent survey, 41 percent of boys ages 8 to 18 said that one of their best friends was a girl." - perhaps this will help some of the gender idiocy improve.

You really are just asking to be spoiled here.
For now I'll just say wait for Ethan Rayne to show up. And then Band Candy.

There are a few painful eps in S1, and oh yeah, that's one of them.
"People get that Gilles is, well, Gilles, right? They aren't writing lots of terrible fic about him wearing leather pants and being a dom are they? Because in Harry Potter fandom, that's what would happen."
Oh, there's canon justification for that, just not until S2-ish. And there's loads of Giles/Buffy BDSM. Some of it might even be good, but that ship hits my mile-wide quasi-incest squick, so I've no idea.

As for Buffy -- I watched all of it, for the first time, a few months ago, and totally loved it. Giles was definitely one of my favourites, and as others have said... keep watching. ;) (And... er... I have to admit, I love the idea of Giles being all dommy in his tweed suit...)

*grins and wrings her hands with evil glee*
Also, S1 is pretty much universally agreed to be what you tolerantly get through to understand the rest of the series. The good stuff, and there is a hell of a lot of it, is yet to come!

Also, some day I'm going to write a full essay/post on why Joss Whedon is the only man in Hollywood that I would really like to have dinner someday:-)
And re: tween boy grooming? I find myself feeling a certain amount of smug satisfaction. We had to go through it, now so do you. Petty, I admit, but still... The thing I find really sad about it is that it takes it happening to boys before people really start cluing in to how damaging it is.

One of my New Year's resolutions is to be kinder to teenagers: it's way too easy to mock them without taking the two seconds necessary to remember how terrible and scary and complicated life was at that age, not only because of the effects of puberty, but because adults are constantly pointing out how much you have to learn and how far you have to go without really giving you an opportunity to actually learn and or go before they start yelling at you for doing it wrong. (emphasis mine)
This is especially true in the comments section; why do adults act all shocked at sullen teenagers when they are constantly mocking and disregarding them for going through an uncomfortable, yet completely natural bodily process that they themselves went through?

but that also means that for half an instant, countless people were forced to grapple with the idea that someone they loved was gay, even if that someone was a fictional character.
(It's a rant about subtext and slash and how we need that to stop so that we can have some actual gay characters who are gay without it being pivotal to the plot)
