  • Last night we went to see The Wolfman. I sort of loved it in the way that they really tried to recreate the feel of the old black & white: from the camera angles to the music to the emotional (such as they were notes). I think, really, it was nearly entirely successful for what they were trying to do, I'm just not sure it's the sort of thing that holds an appeal for the modern audience.

I was also quite, quite taken with using Benicio Del Toro in the main role. He's not traditionally handsome and in some ways there's a great deal about his face that's quite feminine. His looks alone made him Other before he was even bitten by the wolf, and I was taken both with the casting and degree to which they used the things that can make it hard to cast Del Toro as opposed to just ignoring them. I also enjoyed the hell out of Anthony Hopkins, who often phones it in in movies like this, but who I thought was really perfect.

Are there about eight billion things wrong with thismovie (or lingering issues from the 1941 film they didn't find a way to solve)? You bet. Did I want to do academia on this film from about three minutes in? TOTALLY.

It was like, and this will sadly turn a lot of you off, as if Baz Luhrmann had made a werewolf movie.

  • Someone get me psyched for Gally? Right now I'm all "too much to do, scary panel, Jack is sad." HELP, PEOPLE.

  • Meanwhile, voting has opened in Round 5 of the Children of Time awards. A couple of my stories show up in a few categories, but more than that, this is a great chance for me to look at other people's fics I either loved at the time and forgot about or stuff I never happened to see when they were first posted. There are some real gems in there and I am torn on several categories.

  • While we've still not bought our tickets for England (and don't get me started on airfares for the July trip), Patty did at least sort her spring break home stuff, so we're making progress on that front, such as it is.

  • Okay, off to groceries, then work, then, if I'm very lucky, time for laundry too.

OMG, it's going to be so fun!! I've never been before, and I'm getting on a plane ALONE for the first time so that I can go. There will be much drunken silliness, at least on my end ;)

See, I have to focus on the, OH GOD FUN part, so that I'm not focused on the OH GOD PLANE part.

We only just bought our tickets for July (UK -> US though) and we went through a *lot* of searching before settling on Aer Lingus Manchester to Boston via Dublin. Husband had found a very good fare on Virgin, but when he went back to it later that night it had jumped up $100.

You may have seen this already, but the Frugal Traveler blog mentioned some search engines I hadn't heard about before that might be useful:

I went to see The Wolfman with serious classic horror fans and we were all impressed -- they were clearly more interested in an old-style film than modern slasher horror (and hooray for that).

But too bad about the CGI bear.

    For "they" read "the filmmakers."

I'm planning to see The Wolfman today (or Shutter Island, if the timing doesn't work out), and I was excited before -- Del Toro! Hopkins! Hugo Weaving! a Rick Baker monster! -- but after reading It was...as if Baz Luhrmann had made a werewolf movie, I'm really psyched.

I read that as "someone get my pissed for Gally" and I thought, well if you start drinking now...

I'll have to see The Wolfman; the director did The Rocketeer and October Sky, two favorites of mine.

Personally, I'd see that in a heartbeat.

You'll be doing Scary Panel with me?

(wait, that might scare you off even more...)

Yeah. I mean, I'm excited about that, but... yeah.

Wow, had no interest in this film till you said that! I'll be there with bells on!

    Have a wonderful time!
