  • Johnny Weir forces people to think about what they actually mean by "family friendly".

  • Here, have one of my regular linkages to [livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness's all too frequent round-ups of news coverage of anti-gay incidents.

  • The pope has been implicated in the cover-up of sexual abuse of children committed by priests and now the Vatican says there is a campaign against him. I, meanwhile, am wondering just how this narrative arc is going to play out. I'm pretty sure this is going to get bigger and more intense and as such I don't think we can predict how it's going to play out. Interesting stuff.

  • Darlings, I want, very badly, a black or grey sweater-vest that will look awesome over a dress shirt and tie. I should just go to the Macy's boys department again, shouldn't I? Because everything I find cut for women is too "look at my boobs" and not at all what I'm envisioning.

  • Did the New York Times really just headline this men's fashion story The Chic of Araby? Of course they did. Oi. I like some of the looks and there's stuff to work with there, but .... do we need to have another chat about Orientalism? *sigh*

  • I've mostly been ignoring what's going on with The Casimir Effect (of interest to Torchwood fen since it's GDL's current project), because I've enough problems keeping track of my own stuff, but the funding model is both interesting and rational although also the sort of thing that I think causes controversy in some parts of fandom and is also potentially interesting in terms of what type of ownership audiences feel they have or should have of creative projects. Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] firefly_124 has an update on the current state of affairs. I was amused by the "anti-noodle fund" aspect of things.

  • My copy of Idol Musings came last night. It was sort of interesting to see it in text -- because many of these pieces work differently off-line than on. For one, what we think of as a "long" LJ entry is much shorter in text. For another, I think the editor did a really good job with her selections -- there wer very few of the types of pieces I often hated throughout my participating in LJ Idol, and I thought as a collection that removed the time and competition element they created a moving portrayal of why people engage with social media that's more like LJ and less like Facebook. I also got a huge kick out of (and experienced a bit of chagrin at) seeing my Australia piece in print and was also impressed with myself for "This Native Tongue That Came From Bankers."

  • At work being constructive now. Just for a few hours. Then I'm going to go home and try to cook a relatively proper meal. The degree of bachelor laziness I've been engaging in with Patty away is a bit too awful to mention, and eating real food on an appropriate schedule would kinda be a good idea about now. Tonight I'll watch some Whoniverse stuff. Tomorrow morning I'll go to Costco. Meanwhile, on Monday I have to call Delta, because I've somehow wound up with two different frequent flyer numbers from them, both of which are accruing points, and that needs to be consolidated with the London trip.

Ooh, thanks for the signal boost!

Thanks also for these sundries posts, which often point me to things I'd have missed otherwise.

You should hit the boys department again.

    Hit the boys department, definitely.

That's what I want (sweaters that show off boobs) as I've got small ones and I'm girly girl and it's not fair I've got small ones! I've run into guys with bigger boobs than mine! I have to wear a push up and they wouldn't have any need and I'll just stop this ramble now...

Yes, 'family friendly' events usually aren't very friendly at all to my family...

But Oriental-ism is cool, and exotic and... and probably sells pretty well.

    Like the first dark-haired model.

Don't like the make-up of the second model. He looks sick or something. (Hey, maybe they were trying to make him look 'shell shocked'?)

#4 made me think "Lawrence and his boyfriend!" Yeah, bad of me, I know.

Love the boots. Not sure about the rest. Some of the scarf stuff has me wanting to play dress-up with the models. As in I don't like the stuff in the photo as presented and would like to re-arrange things.

I've been attempting to keep a close eye on the latest with the pedo-priest stuff. I'm Catholic, but I don't believe in "the bible according to the pope." (And why did I type that as 'bibble' first?) I'm interesting in seeing how it develops.

Love your musings. Where I live there's never been that "native tongue" thing, but maybe Dallas is just too new to have anything like that. I mean, we're barely 100 years old as a city. (I think.) And Dallas is so into tearing down the old stuff and rebuilding new, I can see this spilling over into other facets of life as well.

Orientalism or not, the fashion spread tripped my Lawrence of Arabia fetish.

    I'll be in my bunk.

Great, now I have Paul McCartney crooning "Sheik of Araby" on a loop in my head.

Also, I'm wondering what kind of routine Johnny Weir would perform to "Sheik of Araby."

Y'know, if I were the catholic church now, I'd shut up. I mean, it's bad enough they're constantly ranting about "moral issues" and people's sex lives, sexuality and reproduction - which is dodgy anyway - but to do so after scandal after scandal after scandal? Seriously - people in great big crystal palaces should put the catapults away. It's embarrassing

And thanks for the linkies :)

I predict that they're going to get worse. In their head, squealing about awful! sexual! immorality! distracts people from their own reprehensible history. The louder they shout, the less attention people pay to their own screwups, goes the thinking. It would be funny, if they weren't still so powerful. I believe this may actually run counter to a little story about splinters, planks of wood and eyes, but I can't be sure...

I'll agree with you. Things with the Catholic Church are going to get worse before there's any improvements or changes. Sigh...

It will be interesting to see how the Church handles these new scandals outside of the US. When these cases erupted in the US, the RCC tried at first to suggest that it was a case of the licentiousness of American society "infecting" the clergy, and then casting the outrage of parishioners as sign of laypeople getting "uppity".

There was a minor scandal in the UK. And then Ireland. And Germany - and now South America

I think the cumulative effects of the scandals will largely serve to shoot down the "isolated incident" argument.

Did that argument ever get any traction? Tbh the excuses they've come up with come out a lot as desperate flailing

Weir is absolutely right that he would help fill their seats. I'm not a particularly big fan of ice skating, but I would go *well* out of my way to see him skate. I would drop much more money than I intended, and then I would do it again.

He's got something special on the ice.

Re: The Casimir Effect, I'm actually a huge fan of crowdfunding. I think it's a good way to make a thing if you've got support but not much in the way of budget. Plus, I've seen it save at least one creative in dire straits (Cat Valente), so it's really in that "often a good idea" column for me.

Often since I don't doubt it could go badly if one used it for evil, but...

I think it's cool too, I just look at the manner in which it has potential to intersect with other cultural issues and it gives me pause not in a "don't do that" way but in a "oh man, that's going to make something _interesting_ happen" wherein "interesting" is potentially of the "like an ugly hat" variety. But man, I wish I had projects that were crowdfundable. I've certainly got the eyeballs to make that stuff go.

Another thing (aside from the ugly hat I'm putting back on in 9 minutes) that occurs to me is that I sometimes mix crowdfunding in my head with direct donation for services/products, which isn't quite the same thing.

    Except when it is.

Complicated. People bad. Tea good. And I'm with you on the wishing the crowdfunding thing seemed applicable to something at the moment. I've considered trying to crowdfund my chest situation, but would rather that be a 'hey, you get this thing for your trouble and proceeds go to this other thing' model more than 'we will make this thing if you pay for it' like Casimir is.

I have indeed. It's a consideration at some point, though if I do such a thing, there will be a mad act of creation involved as well. Even if it's a free download on Smashwords or something.

Have you tried the extra small sized menswear at Tristan? They do lovely sweater-vests, and their sizing runs pretty narrow even for a trendy shop (smaller than H&M's, IME).
