blackberry help

Last night, my Blackberry was low on batteries, so I plugged it into my mac to charge (as I have before) and went to bed.

I woke up (early, thank god) and the screen was dark and wouldn't turn on. There was a solid red light for charging. I've removed and reinserted the battery. The thing still won't turn on.

I really need to get this thing working, and I have no technical support options I don't think, because I'm in the UK.

Does anyone know how to make this thing work again?

What model is it? Does it have a Micro SD card in it?

rm, do you have the blackberry manager installed? (software on your mac laptop.)

that will give you the desktop manager. there are a couple of options: first is that your display is having issues. second is that there's been a system software fail. third is a hardware fail, that may be helped by getting a new battery. (check inside the battery compartment; is there a red/pink square anywhere? if so, then the blackberry got wet enough to injure the battery possibly.)

Desktop manager, if you have it installed (or download and install it) should detect the blackberry if it's hooked in via USB. if it detects, then you have the possibility of backing up your data and re-downloading the system software, if that's the issue.

My personal suspicion is that it's a battery fail, and that you may have to look round london for a carrier store. (or, failing that, order from newegg or http://blackberrysource.com/ and have shipped to your hotel, if you're going to be there a few days.)

Aha. From Trillian's link above:

Charging from a mini usb to usb cord is not the optimal method of charging. When your macbook went to sleep so did the usb ports.

Try a travel charger that plugs into the wall.


I wasn't aware that was a problem with macs (don't use one myself.) betting this is the source of the problem.

Stupidly, I've no idea the model, because it doesn't say anywhere. It does contain some sort of card.

Take a photo of it, then the Internet can find out for you what model it is!

Many Vodafone (and perhaps other operators) shops have charging stations in them (you have to pay a bit, but ...) and they should be easily findable in Cardiff. And if it doesn't charge there, they ought to be able to take a look at it and hopefully tell you what's wrong.

Yes, this is a known mac thing - happens on my PC as well. Also I emailed/LJed you the contact info for my mac tech in London. She works at the mac store there.

An Apple shop like this one will almost certainly sort things out for you and will probably be immensely reassuring with it.
