I was only on season 3 when 7 was airing and, as goes with most fandoms I am late to, half of my flist was already deep into Buffy and Angel. Most of the posts I saw were very condescending about Marsters as an actor and the Spike storyline. Some of the posts I saw after Once More With Feeling were positively scathing towards him. Tunes changed once 7 had ended, but at the time, pretty much every post or comment I accidentally read (keeping away from spoilers was impossible) was about refusing to take him as an actor seriously or Spike's pain and affection for Buffy as genuine. One phrase that has stuck in my mind since then was someone referring to the cross scene as "Whedon whining".
I can't help but notice that reactions seem to be the complete opposite for people who watched the show in one go (as I did and you are doing) as opposed to as each season aired, particularly if they did so after the show's conclusion. The Angel vs. Spike wars are thankfully long dead.
I'd be curious as to whether anyone else has the same perspective.
