Another change in direction that I admire was Byrd's relatively recent calls for the coal industry to work with environmentalists, to be proactive in addressing climate change, and to tone down the climate of hostility between environmentalists and those who depend on the coal in WV. I'm not too familiar with the politics around coal, but I've heard from others that his statements were a Big Deal. I wish we could have seen him continue down that path.
