  • Yesterday, my father called me and told me not to get gout.

  • Hey, can we talk about John Stewart's facial hair? I think he looks hot (minus the marshmallow fluff); Patty hates it. But we both want to know, WHY this grooming change. Anyone?

  • No one told me, NO ONE TOLD ME, that the actor who plays Arthur in Inception is that kid from Third Rock from the Sun. I read Arthur/Eames porn yesterday and now I feel dirty, not in the good way.

  • You know what's awesome about Inception? You (read: me) can write something really long and smart about it and be totally wrong. Awesome interview with Dileep Rao here.

  • Gay tango festival in Argentina. Meanwhile, New York City will be having its own LGBT tango festival in October. One day I should like to be less incompetent at tango than I am, but I think it means Patty and I taking proper lessons as opposed to the quickies in crowded ballrooms wherein I get all frustrated and am no joy to anyone.

  • CNN has an odd article (it's the slightly breezy tone), about the mental health issues potentially involved in getting plastic surgery to look like a particular celebrity. The article, somewhat hilariously, also tells us that "not everyone can look like a Pitt or a Jolie, despite the advancements in plastic surgery."

  • Hey can anyone tell me if Chocomize is related to Chocri or which came first or whatever?

  • How to measure yourself for custom menswear. Note: specific instructions from specific retailers/designers, etc, may vary; listen to them first. Also note: if you are female bodied there's stuff obviously not included in here that you'd want to consider for both fit and presentation/illusion; if you have a question, ask me.

  • I have, because of its upcoming conference in New York and a series of awesome "Tourist, don't be a asshole" things people are writing for it, become aware of BlogHer. Would anyone care to shed some light on this thing? Since my main reaction is one of (inappropriately) blaming women for being timid about speaking or existing online mixed with (moderately more appropriate) generalized rage that it should be this way. What is BlogHer? Do you use it? It is a good thing? Why should I shut my face? Help, help, I'm being confused! (ETA: For some reason, several commenters have assumed that my theoretical discomfort with BlogHer comes from some issue related to SAHMs, despite the fact I, in no way, mention motherhood in this item; more on what I was trying to puzzle out in this comment).

  • Prepositions and the ongoing mess over the Islamic center that may be built near World Trade Center Site.

  • A bizarre story involving a military contractor, a memory erasing pill that doesn't exist, a $100,000 belt buckle and some hookers. And not, by the way, written by William Gibson.

  • [livejournal.com profile] xtricks has another installment in what I can't seem to stop calling Teh Buttsex Series! The concluding list of "what is not in the butt" made me laugh so hard I am ashamed.

  • Because of Gattaca news stories about one of Saturn's moons make me tear up: The lakes of Titan are shrinking.

  • Last night on Angel:

I take back everything I said about Torchwood being a soap opera. Angel is a fucking soap opera. Cordy is evil (which throws us back to just which Powers were up to what when they had her ascend back when, and was that the beginning of the planning for the current narrative apocalypse?); Angel is still Angelus; Wesley just had to chop off his dead ex-girlfriend's head; Gunn is blaming Fred for the kiss she never got around to consenting too; and, OH YEAH, Cordy is pregnant with another fucking demon baby (is this 3? 4?) and this time she says it's Connor's and she's been banging the Beast. WHAT THE FUCK, SHOW? WHAT THE FUCK?

On the other hand, since they put Angel/Angelus in a cage, I gotta say the acting and the directing has really tightened up and is pretty masterful.

  • It's Tuesday. Does you know what Tuesday means? White Collar and Covert Affairs. Still working on the Auggie/Jack fic, but it's working. Also thinking someone should write a Covert Affairs/Inception crossover. You know you want Auggie hunting Arthur down in dreamspace, right?

Meanwhile, much to Patty's relief, Project Runway starts Thursday.

I think we're going to try to see The Kids are All Right this week.

    - Tuesday night on USA. WHOO HOO!!!

    - You didn't know about Arthur? Oops. Oh, and it's definitely and *OOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLD* moment. He's actually a very in demand actor and there are rumors that Nolan wants him for the next Bat-villain.

    - A bizarre story involving a military contractor, a memory erasing pill that doesn't exist, a $100,000 belt buckle and some hookers. And not, by the way, written by William Gibson. -> I was thinking Bruce Sterling myself.

Awesome. Nolan really gravitates towards male actors with a certain set of facial features (Cillian Murphy (who he's used before), the dude who plays Arthur, and Guy Pearce are all really, REALLY of a type. I could probably list a few more if I thought about it)

I liken BlogHer to a collective of sorts: It's made up of female bloggers from all walks of life and across all platforms. They sponsor a lot of conferences -- the one involving food blogging is one of the bigger ones, from what I understand. Most of the food blogs I read belong to it.

(That's not to say it's all about food because it isn't. I think any female with a blog on any subject can join, but my gut tells me it's skewered more toward SAHMs. I could be wrong, though).

    good luck with that

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Arthur) - he has been doing a lot of fantastic stuff in the last few years. This is a great, great article about his career and self and transition from sitcom to indie films: http://www.details.com/celebrities-entertainment/cover-stars/201008/inception-actor-joseph-gordon-levitt

I'm going to see Inception tonight, so I scrolled through comments without reading spoilers, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt has turned out to be quite an impressive actor. Two I suggest from him: Brick, which is this noir movie, dialogue and all, filmed in a high school setting, and The Lookout, which is about a kid dealing with life after a car accident that has left him with disabilities.

Maybe it's because I've seen both of those that I've already been inoculated against thinking of him as the kid from Third Rock? Anyway, I'm REALLY excited to see the film tonight.

Echoing what's been said above re: BlogHer, but I want to add that I read the blogs of several woman who are involved, and I've actually found it to be a really feminist organization. Some of the people involved are SAHM's - to be honest, most of the blogs I read are "mommyblogs" or cooking blogs - but I think I've found it really empowering to note how these women are taking on stereotypes about what it means to be a mom in this day and age. They're affirming the very feminist ideal that women have the right to do whatever they want with their lives, including being a SAHM, and a lot of them have used their blogs to launch creative enterprises, independent businesses, websites, books, support groups, etc. I've found them to be great role models, and I really have a lot of respect for the organization.

    Date: 2010-07-27 04:40 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
I'm slightly intrigued that everyone has thought my moment of pause is related to SAHM for some reason as I have never mentioned moms of any sort.

For me the moment of pause is a response to a sort of free-floating idea that women can't play on the broader internet but must remains in a safe space.

Now having safe spaces is really good and I'm a part of safe spaces, including some women-only spaces (despite a certain degree of gender offness I feel about that), and some people have absolutely, positively had experiences that means these are going to be the dominant (or sole) spaces for them because that's what's comfortable and that's all FINE.

But I got online in 1990 (as an embarrassing article in Sassy Magazine will attest) and the idea that women should be scared online is one that really bothers me (and one that was pervasive then -- there are no girls here and they wouldn't want to be and it's bad for them), even as some women do have every reason to be scared online.

Knowing noting about BlogHer, other than its name, my first reaction was that it was about telling women that this space, the BlogHer space, was the only okay space for them. This, apparently, isn't what BlogHer is, although that was my reaction based both upon my own biases and their branding (which I admittedly explored for about five minutes).

But none of that, anywhere is about SAHM.

I always thought that playing Angelus really showed off David Boreanaz' acting skills without resorting to chewing the scenery, which would be really easy to slip into in that role.

Also? Angel never strikes me as sexy. *Angelus* does, which is both funny and scary. But then evil is often sexier than good is.

Wesley just had to chop off his dead ex-girlfriend's head

I think the secret goal of the show was to see just how much pain they could put Wesley in.
