  • I crashed early last night (tired, headache, stomach weirdness) and peripherally remember lying on Patty while she was reading and saying things (me, not her!) that made no sense. Ah, hopefully I was cute. Or hopefully at least she thought so.

  • Right now the ten day forecast for our beach weekend is making some noises about rain. But I expect this to change. And if it doesn't, it's why I sprung for the room with the jacuzzi tub for two, so hey, either way, we're good.

  • Hey two Children of Time nominations. Pleasant surprise. Crap, I should write my WIAD.

  • For the first time a US envoy has participated in the ceremony marking the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The hope is that Obama will eventually participate himself.

  • Meanwhile Kenzaburo Oe has an op-ed on Hiroshima and the art of outrage.

  • Wheat prices soar because of droughts and elevated temperatures around the world. Celiac wonders if crap that doesn't need to have wheat in it will stop having wheat in it.

  • Cancer cells feed on sugar. Apparently, though, they like certain types of sugar better. Like fructose. As in high fructose corn syrup. Seriously, HFCS is really fucking hard to avoid, but here's yet another reason. That shit is evil.

  • The recent Prop 8 ruling poses a challenge for both parties. Because, of course, gay folk? Problem children, not people. Believe me, I am well versed in the arts of political pragmatism, but I'm so fucking tired. And, by the way, in case you're not clear, the article will remind you that Obama opposes equal marriage rights but supports equal rights for LGBT people. That bit of bullshit isn't just tortured logic and hypocrisy, it's the eternal desexing of LGBT folks. You're all right, as long as you don't desire.

  • The Indiana hospital accused of egregious (non)treatment of a trans woman responds.

  • Target has figured out that we're pissed.

  • Project Runway has sort of become a parody of itself. It's way too ready-to-wear focused for my taste now. I don't give a shit about Marie Claire or referring to adult women as girls, and just because stuff is now and well made (yes, ugly fucking jumpsuit, I'm talking to you), I don't think it should win. Fashion this week is shit. I'm glad someone said that creepy bowler hat guy was creepy, and I'm relieved he's off the show. I was terrified that they'd keep finding excuses to leave him is because he's clearly a drama magnet, and I suspect they'll find a way to bring him back later (perhaps when someone extra goes home next week because of whatever is up with the ambulances?). Anyway, I am not impressed. And neither is Patty.

Also, Austin Scarlett, you are ten types of awesome, but there's being fabulously gay and camp about the military, and then there's being annoying. Guess which one you were last night?

  • Things that are now, thankfully, out of the category of "so there's this rumour about a thing" - Jane Espenson among others (including the lovely John Fay) is writing for Torchwood S4.

  • When Emma Watson cuts off her hair and you say it doesn't work for you or you don't find it appealing? That's cool. Whatever turns your crank.

When Emma Watson cuts off her hair and you explain that everyone always realizes how ugly and annoying various actresses are when they cut off their hair and how no "girl" ever looks good like that because "have you ever seen a centerfold with short hair?" You are being creepy, misogynist, gender-policing, sort of an asshole and completely unaware of the idea of socially-constructed beauty. And if you're a straight woman saying or agreeing with that? It doesn't make you any less so. Thanks for playing.

Uh, like one of the commenter on the Target article said, I'm surprised. You usually don't hear anything like that from a company that did something stupid. I believe I'm impressed. Pity Target's CEO wasn't running BP when the spill happened.

I think I'm back to shopping at Target. Want to see the new store in Harlem anyway.

I've heard that Australia defaults to cane sugar as a sweetener. Unfortunately, a fast search hasn't established whether this is true, and neither have I been able to find a comparison of pancreatic cancer rates between the US and Australia. In other words, I'm curious about whether the in vitro hypothesis has supporting evidence or not.

I find myself wondering why Target hasn't apologised to the, you know, actual LGBT community that they harmed, or offered balancing support to civil rights causes to make amends.

On the other hand, the fact that an apology was made at all, and the text of it, is relatively classy. Good first step.

Yup. I'm not back to shopping at Target yet, but I could be if they keep on looking at this one and come up with a bit more.

Note, however, that Target did not apologize for making the donation. Target apologized for annoying people. Sort of like saying, "I'm sorry you're hurt, but I'm gonna keep standing on your toes anyway." I agree with the poster who said that some sort of balancing donation or other concrete redress needs to be made.

A friend of mine was recently rejected at Planned Parenthood because she's trans and had neither the medical training nor the sensitivity training to provide decent medical care for her. I'm glad to see that hospital is taking steps to remedy their ignorance because really, after reading that news article and how the staff handled the situation, good God.

So, now we've moved from speculation to proof in the "RTD is a really giant Buffy/Angel fanboi" department. Still, he's hired some very good people, and hopefully he'll leave them alone to do their very good writing.

As far as the hospital flap is concerned, I don't have enough information. I do not want the hospital.

I want the licenses of the doctors and nurses who abandoned their patient. Period, full stop.

I want names. With names, I can get license numbers. With that, I can file a complaint with the State Board, not to mention the board that certifies them in their specialties.

Hospital. Pfft. I want their jobs.

    Re. COT - Congratulations! :)

Re. Emma Watson. Grrrrr. I have long hair now because I like it better that way, but for a long time I had very short hair because hubby liked it better that way and I thought it would be something different, :). I once had a customer say, "You are just too pretty. Why do you dress up like a dike?"

About a year or so later, my hair was *slightly* longer and the same customer just happened to have me sitting next to me when another woman with hair how mine used to be walked by and he said, "She'd look so much better if she didn't dress so much like a dike."

Both times, I just walked away, because how do you respond to something like that? It's been years since this happened and I still haven't thought of a witty comeback... Also, unfortunately in my business one makes more money with long hair. It's fortunate for me, since I actually like having mine long, but I do feel bad for others with whom I work who prefer it short and lose money from cutting it, :(.

And I just checked out Emma Watson's hair. Eh, I don't care for it myself, but if it makes her happy... :) Much as I love long hair, I would never presume to say that anyone *has* to have it. My mother, one aunt and every grandmother (blood and in-law) that I had had short hair.

This idea that women must have long hair is something that's gone in cycles this century and don't even get me started on the idea that men must have short hair...

I am completely bewildered by the resurgence(? Were they ever actually popular?) of jumpsuits. I look at them, and I imagine wearing one and using a public restroom, and NO. Just, no. That said, as jumpsuits go, it wasn't bad -- I liked the low back, and the adjustable neckline. I'm unconvinced it wouldn't have worked as well as a top and slacks. And it least it wasn't a goddamn romper. Or held closed with safety pins. Speaking of which, "A straight man in a gay man's world"? Go cry on the shoulder of Ralph Lauren, you twerp.

why anyone would be concerned about an actresses/actors haircut (outside of a particular role is beyond me. I mean of course I have personal preferences (I'm a sucker for longer hair on men) but I don't expect anyone to follow my whims.

Hmmm, trying to figure out the Target statement, am I understanding they didn't know when donating? Lying liars who lie, someone had to know don't you think?

Prop 8, I can't pretend to understand how you must feel. I can only say I was momentarily relieved then ready for the country to get a grip ...its all happening at a snails pace it seems. (I'm a straight girl living in a an ultra conservative town who is baffled by the controversy over gay marriage, always have been.) But I imagine this is how things must of felt in other battles for equal rights and we are moving forward so that is good. (Hey I'm an American I want it instantly!)

And sugar! its making me fat and keeling me! *sob*

I'm going off to my corner and paint now

Emma Watson looks stunning, obviously I am biased as I like the chop-and-grow oscillation. But still. Good for her.

I am dying for Jezebel to weigh in on the related stupidity though.

Man, I can't believe people sometimes. Watson's hair cut makes her look like Mia Farrow, circa Rosemary's Baby. I can't remember but did people freak out like that when Natalie Portman shaved her head? I suppose they probably did.

Austin Scarlett bad camp moment: agreed. OTOH, the boy can do a push-up.

I'm mostly willing to provisionally accept Target's apology with the understanding that they'll follow through. But still. Thin ice. OTOH, my choices are "or Wal-Mart" around here for a lot of things. Grr.

Likewise, that hospital. Though I'm with the commenter who wants to be able to lodge a complaint.

Oh, and Emma Watson can do whatever the hell she wants with her hair on account of it being on her head. I am not the arbiter of somebody else's head. I have enough trouble managing my own.

Oh, Emma, darling, you've just tempted me to give my own hair the hack, again. I was already getting annoyed with it--for the first time in, like, three years, my hair's been long enough to put in a ponytail, and all it does is blow in my face and keep me up at night, because it brushes against my cheek and I startle awake thinking it's a spider (or a weta, based on where I am now).

Maybe once I've used it to learn to French braid or something, I'll decide. And if I can find a stylist like my last one who can make me look really hawt (http://www.flickr.com/photos/23149871@N07/3843940295/in/set-72157616372498108/photos/23149871@N07/3843940295/).

Er, actually, this may be the first time ever I gave Emma Watson a second look. Very flattering.

Coincidentally, I got *my* hair cut today. Not quite as drastic, but I was looking a little Sean Cassidy-ish there for a moment. (OK, if Sean Cassidy were a 40-year-old fat butch dyke.)

Yet, if you have long hair you are always getting comments about how you should cut it because only little girls have long hair.

So women aren't supposed to have long hair, but we can't have short hair... hmmm... are we supposed to be bald like the Newcomer women in Alien Nation?
