  • I crashed early last night (tired, headache, stomach weirdness) and peripherally remember lying on Patty while she was reading and saying things (me, not her!) that made no sense. Ah, hopefully I was cute. Or hopefully at least she thought so.

  • Right now the ten day forecast for our beach weekend is making some noises about rain. But I expect this to change. And if it doesn't, it's why I sprung for the room with the jacuzzi tub for two, so hey, either way, we're good.

  • Hey two Children of Time nominations. Pleasant surprise. Crap, I should write my WIAD.

  • For the first time a US envoy has participated in the ceremony marking the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The hope is that Obama will eventually participate himself.

  • Meanwhile Kenzaburo Oe has an op-ed on Hiroshima and the art of outrage.

  • Wheat prices soar because of droughts and elevated temperatures around the world. Celiac wonders if crap that doesn't need to have wheat in it will stop having wheat in it.

  • Cancer cells feed on sugar. Apparently, though, they like certain types of sugar better. Like fructose. As in high fructose corn syrup. Seriously, HFCS is really fucking hard to avoid, but here's yet another reason. That shit is evil.

  • The recent Prop 8 ruling poses a challenge for both parties. Because, of course, gay folk? Problem children, not people. Believe me, I am well versed in the arts of political pragmatism, but I'm so fucking tired. And, by the way, in case you're not clear, the article will remind you that Obama opposes equal marriage rights but supports equal rights for LGBT people. That bit of bullshit isn't just tortured logic and hypocrisy, it's the eternal desexing of LGBT folks. You're all right, as long as you don't desire.

  • The Indiana hospital accused of egregious (non)treatment of a trans woman responds.

  • Target has figured out that we're pissed.

  • Project Runway has sort of become a parody of itself. It's way too ready-to-wear focused for my taste now. I don't give a shit about Marie Claire or referring to adult women as girls, and just because stuff is now and well made (yes, ugly fucking jumpsuit, I'm talking to you), I don't think it should win. Fashion this week is shit. I'm glad someone said that creepy bowler hat guy was creepy, and I'm relieved he's off the show. I was terrified that they'd keep finding excuses to leave him is because he's clearly a drama magnet, and I suspect they'll find a way to bring him back later (perhaps when someone extra goes home next week because of whatever is up with the ambulances?). Anyway, I am not impressed. And neither is Patty.

Also, Austin Scarlett, you are ten types of awesome, but there's being fabulously gay and camp about the military, and then there's being annoying. Guess which one you were last night?

  • Things that are now, thankfully, out of the category of "so there's this rumour about a thing" - Jane Espenson among others (including the lovely John Fay) is writing for Torchwood S4.

  • When Emma Watson cuts off her hair and you say it doesn't work for you or you don't find it appealing? That's cool. Whatever turns your crank.

When Emma Watson cuts off her hair and you explain that everyone always realizes how ugly and annoying various actresses are when they cut off their hair and how no "girl" ever looks good like that because "have you ever seen a centerfold with short hair?" You are being creepy, misogynist, gender-policing, sort of an asshole and completely unaware of the idea of socially-constructed beauty. And if you're a straight woman saying or agreeing with that? It doesn't make you any less so. Thanks for playing.
