I don't know about formalized rituals (considering that these books were published the year I was born), but I was just reading the Annotated Legends by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and your post brought it to mind. They had a lot to say in the marginal notes about Sturm Brightblade's death, and how badly a lot of fans of the series took it. They apparently got a lot of infuriated and distraught mail and had a few... interesting experiences at Cons, from what they said.
