  • We're all closer to human around here. Yay. Although Patty is now prepping for Cardiff and I'm still over-worked. We got her hostel reservations last night though for her stay before she finds a flat. Today I have to write her a recommendation regarding that.

  • Hilarious Internet conversations last night that started with me sending a ludicrous article about a certain celebrity's swimming pool habits to [livejournal.com profile] tsarina who then sent back pictures of David Bowie with wolves. This later got reported to Sam and Lifty in a discussion about Cumberbach getting car-jacked in South Africa. Okay, maybe you had to be there, but every third email in the thread was, "wait, is this real?" I was laughing so hard.

  • A sad example of how the first, and last, story we write is ourselves: the last story of F. Gywnplaine McIntyre.

  • Hey, [livejournal.com profile] deusabscondidum started [livejournal.com profile] projectother for discussing and writing fiction about various marginalized groups and also for talking about the publishing industry. A sort of catch all community for those of us who aren't seeing enough stories that are reflective of our experiences and may be trying to write some of those stories ourselves.

  • Last night we returned to Angel. It's S5 time now. Okay, and it's pure screaming awesome. But I have questions/comments:

    1. Was this the season creators discovered slash? Lots of overt, not actually that funny, playing it for discomfort, gay references all of a sudden and out of nowhere.
    2. Gunn. Well, I suppose it makes sense from both Watsonian and Doylist positions to do this super-lawyer thing on him, but it intersects with the race issues this show has always had in really not the best way. I also wish we could have seen more of Gunn's private thoughts on this. This is a big plot development and I felt like we deserved more characterization out of it.
    3. WOULD FRED AND WESLEY JUST HOOK UP ALREADY?
    4. Wesley and Angel can't not have chemistry, which makes innocuous scenes ludicrous.
    5. Harmony is AWESOME.
    6. OMG, when Spike comes back, and Angel is all "oh fuck, I hate my ex" and Wesley is all "I thought I'd dodged that walk of shame" and Harmony is... well, Harmony. So funny. But seriously, the intonations of their reactions were so anything other than what makes canonical sense (other than Harm) that I was rolling around I was laughing so hard.
    7. Lots to like here if you are a Torchwood fan. Eternal pain vs. eternal pain!
    8. So much to like here if you are a Torchwood fan I said, repeatedly, "right, so RTD watched this and said, 'this show isn't ballsy enough, let's kill way more people and make every situation no win.'" Because hi, proto-Torchwood, how are you? Also, still a Wesley/Angel shipper, I'm just saying.

  • ETA: So I was just in this cab, that missed its exit, drove across the median (not a line, but a step up little concrete island thing), and BLEW A TIRE and then let me out on the highway. Yeah, I had to pay the fare. And then I called 311. And now I'll have to go to some hearing because of this fucker.

thank you for sharing that link about F. Gwynplaine McIntyre... I'd never heard of him but it somehow feels as if it is important that I now have - not sure if it makes any sense but it's the best I can put it

    Lurking in from Copperbadge's friendslist:

Saddened and shocked by the F. Gwynplaine McIntyre story....I'd read his short stories in Isaac Asimov/Amazing Stories magazines and they were some of my favorites, the one about Mark Twain and the comet alien springs to mind. As does the old saw about the fine line between genius and madness.

Surprising (to me) about Angel S5: It was the first time I could even semi-identify with Harm! I'm an admin assistant, too. I felt her pain in trying to do the job as well as possible in often maddening circumstances. It's another good reason to bring Harm back.

You can probably already tell, but this season's gonna be a frickin' roller coaster. (I briefly intersected with this season when it was first airing, and what was the one full episode I saw? THE PUPPET ONE. And once again the show did something that SHOULD NOT HAVE WORKED DRAMATICALLY, and made it work like gangbusters. My jaw dropped in a good way at that. Then seeing it later in the context of the whole season, it was even clearer how well it worked.)

I've so enjoyed your Buffy/Angel watch-through. Thank you for doing it and for writing about it.

Another reason why my job is sometimes ridiculous: I have padded out David Bowie's jockstrap. http://www.metmuseum.org/Imageshare/ci/regular/1977.333.55_F.jpg

Was this the season creators discovered slash?
Well it was the season Spike joined the cast... (Spike is sometimes referred to as the 'little back dress' of fandom - he fits with everyone and everything.) Or to be meta about it - Spike arrives just as Connor has vanished from Angel's life, and in many ways fills the same role, family ties and all that. Except it's a lot more complicated, and with these two the subtext is impossible to ignore.

So much to like here if you are a Torchwood fan I said, repeatedly, "right, so RTD watched this and said, 'this show isn't ballsy enough, let's kill way more people and make every situation no win.'"

    *laughs*

The icon is from 'Innocence' - after Angel slept with Buffy and lost his soul he saunters into Spike & Dru's lair, making friends again, and in the process kisses Spike. It's sort of a joke, really, but it's the ONLY m/m kiss in the whole show, so we kinda cling to it.

(Still, that one kiss can't hold a candle to the slashiness of this season. Just wait!)

ETA: Angel is often our 'poor dead gay show', which I'm sure you can understand. Also, when Torchwood began, so many former Angel fans went OMG WE APPROVE OF THIS! THANK YOU RUSTY! (Esp because of the CANON slash.)

Not to mention the coat thing. Can't forget the coat. You may think the coat fetishization climaxed with Spike getting his mojo back from re-embracing the coat he took from the body of the cold, dead Slayer he'd just killed in Buffy S7, rather like the coat (and name) Jack wears from the dead guy whose identity he stole. (Well, kinda. The coat relates to the identity, despite not belonging to the real CJH, but I still think the parallel works.) Yeah, no. There's more coming. *sits on hands*

What I'm amazed by is the fact I didn't notice any of this when first watching Torchwood, up to and including CoE. It was only after the fact, when someone mentioned RTD being a Whedon fan, that I found myself going, "Well, that sure explains a lot." Of course, it also raised the question of why he couldn't learn from some of Whedon's mistakes and seemed determined to repeat and/or compound them.

    1. i think it was just that they finally got angel and spike back on screen together - there's more (and spike/angel is totes canon)

    3. oh god... just- just keep watching

    5. YES SHE IS!

    6. BLONDIE BEAR?

i was thinking about this last night, about the differences between DW and TW and audience expectations vs. creator's intent - i think TW was kind of always about failure

where Doctor Who was often about the "indomitable" human spirit and saving the day and triumph (sometimes, not always), Torchwood was, a lot of the time, about human failings (and what you say about RTD and angel kind of reflects that)

The Gunn thing is still problematic, but you do get a good idea of why he did it later. It's not as randonm as it looks.

I think the Spike/Angel interactions are much of what's interesting about season five.

    Harmony is awesome. :)

Re watching bits of five, i can only agree with you on the RTD Wesley/Angel shipper thing.

    The cab thing is unacceptable.

The line between genius and madness is not as thin and ragged as the line between madness and stupidity, and madness and pain are almost the same.

We die alone, and we write alone.
If we choose to speak, at least we may be heard.
