I've never sent a celebrity a birthday card, but I have participated in fannish fundraisers on the occasion of their birthday to their respective favorite charities.

I know one. I read it in a teenybopper magazine when I was small, and I remembered it because it's the same day as mine.
That birthday? Will Wheaton's.

That's awesome, I had no idea.

And so funny.

And IMHO that makes sense and is classy.

I know offhand of three celebrities who share my birthday: Gwen Verdon, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Orlando Bloom. I'm pretty tickled by the first two. *g*

Haven't sent anyone a birthday card, but I have wished them 'Happy Birthday' in my journal, not that I expected them to ever read that.

The Internet really does change things. It occurs to me that, oh, there are all these random celebs I've occasionally Twittered with, I suppose I might say something in that environment, yeah. huh.

Thanks. I almost deleted that comment after I wrote it, though, thinking it kind of looks like I was fishing for more or less that response, which I wasn't, at least not consciously. /babble

Do fictional characters count? It's hard not to know Ianto Jones' birthday in Torchwood fandom.

Nah, it's all good. I'm really, really interested in how people interact with these topics because they were a huge topic and source of anxiety in my childhood; I've written before about my parents and the autograph book they gave me, and the embarrassing letters I wrote to celebrities when I was 12 -- and yet I'm still a fan, and also a pro, and someone who's pretty much uncomfortable in every community on either side of that equation. I'm always interested in what seems normal to people and why, mainly because I realize that on a lot of topics, I'm not sure there is a normal or that what I was told was normal was really, really not.

TRUXFAX.

I think that's a separate poll, or one tangetally linked to this (considering my feelings on fiction/non-fiction). I'll do it in a couple of days.

- Josh Brolin
- Aresenio Hall
- Joe Gariagiola
- Lorne Greene
- Charles Darwin
- Abraham Lincoln
- Christina Ricci

And that's the ones I know off the top of my head.

Elvis Presley and David Bowie don't count, everyone knows those.

I object to the fact that John Lennon is not among your list here.

the embarrassing letters I wrote to celebrities when I was 12

Oh, I've sent embarrassing emails. Just not for anybody's birthday. And as an adult. *cringes*

Didn't as a kid, for some reason, except to presidents. At one point, I had autographed head shots and form letters of the "let's not discourage the eager kid from being a future voter" variety from Nixon, Ford, and Carter. I don't remember what I wrote to them, and I don't think I want to. Nixon's letter was probably written to him in crayon, and probably suggested by my parents. There's precocious, and there's ridiculous. Still write to politicos lots, but generally more along the lines of "please vote for/against xyz" or "stop being a moron" and less along the lines of "what's it like to be president?"

Huh. I wonder if that's why I have an almost active dislike of autographed head shots now. (Stills from scenes featuring a character, I like, just not head shots. *shrug) Because I do remember stumbling back across those in my teens and being kind of creeped out.

and someone who's pretty much uncomfortable in every community on either side of that equation

That amazes me, each time you mention it, because you come across, at least here on LJ, as moving between the two sides of that equation with surprising ease and fluidity.

I ticked 'you or someone close shares a birthday' but it would be more accurate to say that I remembered the date because the date shared with a memorable date for me personally, which was not a birthday. But the reason for retention was the same -- familiar date already.

I don't think I know the birthdays of any of the celebs I'm currently interested. However, I can still tell you all of the Hanson brothers' and Spice Girls' bdays.

The number of fictional characters whose birthdays I know is something I really have no excuse for.
