I've never sent a celebrity a birthday card, but I have participated in fannish fundraisers on the occasion of their birthday to their respective favorite charities.

And IMHO that makes sense and is classy.

I know one. I read it in a teenybopper magazine when I was small, and I remembered it because it's the same day as mine.
That birthday? Will Wheaton's.

TRUXFAX.

I think that's a separate poll, or one tangetally linked to this (considering my feelings on fiction/non-fiction). I'll do it in a couple of days.

I ticked 'you or someone close shares a birthday' but it would be more accurate to say that I remembered the date because the date shared with a memorable date for me personally, which was not a birthday. But the reason for retention was the same -- familiar date already.

I know Burn's (for obvious reasons...and I've sent him a birthday card).

I know John Schneider's because I was obsessed with Dukes of Hazzard when I was a kid and my birthday is the same day (my 8 year old self was convinced this meant I was going to marry him some day). I think I sent him embarassing fanmail around that time.

Celebs that share my b-day: Babe Ruth, Tom Brokaw, and Ronald Reagan.

Back when he was first president, I sent Reagan a b-day card. I said something along the lines of, "HBD, Mr. Pres. We share a birthday, isn't that cool?" I was 11 or so.

Other random celebrities b-day's I remember: J.K. Rowling and James Marsters.

It's just a thing. Little tidbits of useless info I've gathered that had managed to stick.

not only do i share a birthday with john lithgow, we also have the same middle name. of course, he's a few years older than me.
i know few other celeb's b'days, like john lennon, the birthdays of the band rush. mostly, i know my 'birthday twins' - random folks i've met that share my birthday. there's at least a dozen at last count. a few of them are local celebrities where they live - musicians, poets, scholars. but nothing on the scale you're looking at, i think.

I don't know any celebrity birthdays; thus, the other questions don't apply.

Why don't I? Well, why should I *care* about the birthdays of people I don't personally know? (People I do know count as "friends", not "celebrities." Or "enemies", of course, but I haven't cared about their birthdays since learning that mailing dead rats brings angry USPS inspectors to your house.)

Come to think of it, I don't know any of my friends' birthdays either, not off the top of my head. Facebook tells me about that stuff.

do "happy birthday!" tweets count as cards? because I did one of those this morning. though I have actually sent a celebrity a birthday card, too. (as part of a larger "being encouraging and supportive of you making a new record" care package. I don't know if that's better or worse, or if that they had specifically asked their fans to send them random crap is a mitigating factor.)

also my answer of "eh, it's a thing" doesn't really convey my feelings; I'm not proud, exactly, but I'm not embarrassed either. I think "wryly amused" is closer to it.

ETA: 1) I actually don't know Elvis or Bowie's birthday w/out looking it up and 2) I also have that characters birthday thing. Though by characters I really mean Harry Potter and Severus Snape. I used to know the Marauders birthdays', too, or at least Lupin and Black, but I've forgotten them now. Snape I still pause and mentally wish him a good year; Harry I don't care so much anymore.
