yes!

Stricly Ballroom to become a stage musical.

Man, I've been waiting for that rumour to go somewhere for YEARS.

(also if the Gatsby project turns out to be true, I will be delightfully beside myself -- although god knows what any Aussie pub means when they say US-based: could mean filmed here (which I doubt) or just that Fox is handing the money around again).

This is, I think, the proverbial cherry on top of a day that was already pretty awesome.

Also, expect Act 2 in your inbox in an hour or less.

Yay! I love Strictly Ballroom! It's one of my comfort movies and it'll make a great stage show.

One of my secret costuming desires has always been to make outfits for ballroom dance competition. You could just go wild!

!!!!!!!

This seems so obvious I thought it had already happened!

You may think this because it actually started out as a 30 minute stage play that won some awards at some festival in Czekslovakia back when. Um... hi, I have trivia.

Didn't it start originally as a stage production? I seem to remember some story about Fran having to fight to convince the directors etc. that she should play the lead in the film, because she'd been playing the lead in the stage show for a couple of years at least?

It did! Footage of a performance is one of the extras of the Red Curtain box set. I guess that this time they'll have a much bigger budget to throw at it.

Also the original stage version was never longer than 30 minutes I don't think and despite having dancing was not a musical.

I'm surprised it took them this long. That movie rocks. I didn't even know it was a Baz film until years and years later, when I was an adult and discussing the score of Romeo + Juliet with someone, and "Ballroom" was brought up.

Also, I now wonder if it wasn't seeing Tara Morice doing ballroom dancing when I was thirteen than made me realize, faintly, that I was bisexual.
