  • One day I will be in this country and it won't be raining or about to rain. Today is not that day.

  • While I'm still frustrated by many things, there were corn biscuits with jam and nutella for breakfast, and I made a hard-boiled egg for snacks later.

  • On the other hand, there is only one mirror in this entire flat, and despite that it only takes me a few minutes to be totally awesome, are you fucking kidding me? Not even full-length. Hello, whut?

  • So let's recap:

Transportation: I didn't get lost, but it took from 6pm EST when I left for the airport until 7pm here the next day to arrive. I GOT TO SYDNEY FASTER.

Communication: Well, other than I don't know the language and had to talk to an electrician who didn't know mine this morning, that seems relatively non-disastrous. On the other hand the Internet situation is nearly fatal as far as talking to the outside world and getting shit done....

Accommodation: Arguably, the Internet situation also goes here. Um, I have a bed? The stove works? I'm terrified of our refrigerator.

Hair: ONE FUCKING MIRROR, YOU PEOPLE.

  • I'm trying to sort of get to a place of being one with the ascetic/no social or city life here thing and how that's good for my art. I'd rather really be somewhere remote if it was going to feel like this though.

  • Dogboy & Justine loves you. 45 backers for $1,965 so far, meaning we're closing in on that 1/3 mark! Yay.

Tomorrow, keep an eye out for "Wicked Wednesdays" another weekly thing I'll be writing to promote the show. Because of the time difference it'll probably show up at an odd hour for folks in the Americas.

  • Apparently, a lack of women in the inner circles of the campaigns of the two main NYS candidates for governor has led to a testosterone-fueled race. I find myself annoyed by this articles opening (and perhaps all of, I can't get it to load, so y'all will have to tell me) thesis. Because if the campaigns just had more women they'd be nicer. How about, these guys are assholes and they don't seem to value diversity. The function of women in politics is not to calm the men down. It's to, like the men, compete to engage in the business of the state.

    Here, maybe this'll work: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/26/nyregion/26women.html?_r=1&pagewanted=print

It's the print version. No frills, no pics, so it should load more easily.

And you're in Switzerland! Your focus should be on cheese and chocolate, not mirrors! ;)

You've probably said (and I've probably been in a remote bit of Scotland with no internet access) but whereabouts in Switzerland are you? I think I have a Rough Guide to Switzerland hanging around here somewhere (from when I was intending to pop over the border while visiting Annecy) so I could either look up interesting things to do, or mail it to you.

Also, for internet access, I'd get a PAYG 3G USB dongle from a mobile phone shop, if such exist in Switzerland.

Supposedly this won't keep redirecting you back to the local google search engine: http://www.google.com/ncr

You now understand how this country developed a card game with a deck that only has 36 cards, a gadzillion dozen ways to complicate the rules, not the least of which has the 9 and jack being magic, but the highest scoring card being easily beaten by rank of other cards.

I speak of course, of Jass. Do they still televise games on Sunday afternoons? Cliff's grandmother was a grand champion - but I often use it as an example of what people will do with long, cold nights isolated from most of the world...in houses too small to hold the people you get from fucking the nights away.

That said, I'd love to play it again.

Switzerland with internet. When I was there last, it was dialup or nothing - and we didn't get a phone in our apartment for six weeks as it was. Hence, what?

    Hoo hoo, you're RIGHT.

That jack is also called the boer - this gets better the more I think about it. Depending on the rules you're playing by, the one who leads with - or cleans up with - the boer makes the highest points, and it's pretty hard to overcome if you don't respect that one card.

Well - there's your writing project! Chat it up - this is (after curling) one of the national pasttimes and everybody has at least a passing acquaintance with it.
