(no subject)

Patty is doing her Yuletide signup, so I am watching Swiss MTV, and I never watch MTV so I'm seeing all this music I never see, and have you all see this video for Pink's Rise Your Glass?

OMG, I LOVE IT SO HARD (caution: sacrilegious imagry, and some other stuff I don't even know how to warn for, but that I'm pretty sure might be disturbing to some people).

WHY ARE WE ONLY TALKING ABOUT LADY GAGA, THERE'S ALL SORTS OF OTHER WEIRD SMART SHIT OUT THERE?!?!?!

BRB, watching that video FOREVER.

God, I have long loved Pink. She has a lot more message than people often give her credit for.

We watched it twice in a row in my fem theory class on Thursday and spent half the class period discussing it. No joke.

I freaking LOVE Pink and that song - thank you for the link to the vid, hadn't seen that yet. WOW that rocks so hard.

Gah, Pink is my favorite. That video is amazing, thanks so much for linking!

I totally fell in love with that song and the video the first time I watched it a few weeks back. It's absolutely amazing.

Oh thank you, I had not known there was a new P!nk video out, due to lack of television/patronage of entertainment websites (I rather adore her for a variety of reasons).

I think this a lot because, yeah. *puts video on loop forever*

...also, there's probably something off about me that in the scenes where her hair is spiked up, she reminds me terribly of Eddie Izzard for some reason.

Well, it's not just you. I think it's also the heavy mascara/eye liner and perhaps her face is shaped similarly that is reminiscent of Eddie Izzard.

Wow. I had no idea.

Thanks for linking this.

I had seen her performance at the grammys (because hey, aerial work) but I had NO IDEA.

Clearly I need to learn more about this woman. Impressive video. Love the message.

The "milking" scenes remind me of a science fiction short story that I read once that was even more disturbing.

"In The Barn," by Piers Anthony, I'd be willing to bet. From Harlan Ellison's Again, Dangerous Visions?

Yes, that's it. I own the book and had read it a long time ago so I didn't remember the name of the story precisely, thanks for putting the name to it.

[identity profile] elainasaunt.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
A long time ago for me, as well, but clearly it left its mark - like so many stories in those books. I thought the same thing about that scene in the video.

Yes, it's interesting what people remember and why.

-- damn.

That's extremely neat. I actually adore the sacrilegious imagery, especially the nun and the mouthed 'thank you', that's just gorgeous.

[identity profile] sahiya.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa.

I've been enjoying that song for the last few weeks, but I think that video is the first time I've really grasped that that song is a celebration of queerness in all its forms. That's awesome!

[identity profile] thunderemerald.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There aren't words for how much I love Pink right now. Like, that vid made me cry. For serious.

[identity profile] elainasaunt.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, fuck. That song, that video, dredged up a bunch of shit I've been successfully not dealing with for like 45 years now. Not in a bad way, exactly. In fact, I'm damn glad you linked it. Here's yet another example of kinship with people on LJ and why "real life" is in many ways not a useful concept.

[identity profile] heavenscalyx.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link! That's definitely an interesting video. I still have to think about the opening image and the sumo wrestler later in re fatphobia (I like the 2D images of thin girls and the toppling over of one, but the corn dog thing seems like a fat = gluttony thing; one of the things that I think The Guild did right with their first music video was that the fat woman never ate during the video -- she drank various interesting beverages, but all the "glutton" imagery was reserved for her thin teammates). But it is pretty fun and thinky.

Look for Janelle Monae's music videos on YouTube next you get the chance. She might have one in circulation on MTV (Tightrope!) which shows how well she rocks a suit.

Seconding this so much. Monae's music videos are amazing.

[identity profile] jinian.livejournal.com 2010-11-16 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hell yes. I just rewatched "Many Moons" yesterday and still found new stuff in it.

[identity profile] bodlon.livejournal.com 2010-11-16 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the call for Janelle Monae if you're not yet on that wagon.

Also, my favorite moment in this is where she sits up with the nun. Their expressions next to killed me with awesome. Less positively, the nerd dance motif here falls short of Hockey's video for "Song Away," which made me sad-ish. (OTOH, I really like that song by Hockey, so watching the video is no chore for me.)
