There is not enough said about the quiet protest; about the uncommon act of common kindness hidden from the bully and his victim. You don't have to tell a teacher when a bully is bullying someone. You don't have to stand up and get in that bully's path and become their next victim. It sounds extreme, but you can anonymously pull the fire alarm, ending the scene, if you want. You can suddenly see a piece of trash on the ground a teacher REALLY needs to deal with and bring them to the spot near the bullying for that specific purpose and nothing more. You can have "business" with the bullied child, agreeing with the bullies and the crowd and drag the child off somewhere "private" and then let them go with a promise from them that they won't tell anyone or you'll really make them regret it.
There are ways to do what's right, without standing up and casting a shadow doing it. I wish more kids knew that. It could unparalyze them from the fear and make them feel their quiet rebellions all the way to their toes.

It hurts.
