Mubarak stepping down now. Handing control to Suleiman; probably not enough to end protests and will possibly cause protest movement to swell further now that the results are getting so concrete.

HOLY CRAP, WHUT?

I'd be interested to know what the Egyptian citizens have to say about his "they're not ready for democracy" line. Especially if he's the knew Jefe.

Progress! I'm hoping for a smooth, peaceful and production transition.

From the sounds of Suleiman's track record, I'm reasonably certain it won't be enough to end the protests (he's very much, if not Mubarak's man, then a man in the same mould). Still, a development: I'm sure a lot of Egyptians would've thought Mubarak's ouster unthinkable, literally, a relatively short while ago.

A senior member of Egypt's governing party has told the BBC he "hopes" that President Hosni Mubarak will transfer power to Vice-President Omar Suleiman.

Looks like it's still in the possible rather than the certain future. I mean, it's still significant that they're talking about it even as a possibility, but he's not out yet.

=DD Well, at least it's progress. I hope things will get better there! And dead people as little as possible...

De Toqueville, writing about the French Revolution, referred to the “paradox of rising expectations”: the revolution hit its boiling point not when the situation in France was completely miserable, but when things were actually getting better, because as far as the people were concerned, they weren’t getting better fast enough.

I love de Tocqueville! "Democracy in America" is one the most fascinating things I've ever read.

*nods* Read about it in history classes: it makes so much sense.

Totally engrossing! I'm so curious to hear what Mubarak is going to say this evening. And Suleiman? *Cringe*

Is he actually stepping down? I'm not seeing anything on Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN that he's actually stepping down yet.

Nerp. Looks like he's sort of teetering back a little (constitutional amendments, transfer of some powers to his veep) just to try and avert a coup while keeping the maximum of his pride intact.

Tahrir Sq sees wut he did thar.

I do believe that was one of the most inept speeches I've ever heard in my life.
