America is strange when it comes to marriage, as so many different rights are attached to the status, so I can understand (though I disagree with the method) why it would be one of those things a minority that is denied those rights would fight for.
But so often I see marriage used as a weapon to invalidate other kinds of relationships (be they romantic or otherwise, pairs or poly) and especially used as a ticky box sign for "normal" that I find myself really frustrated and angry at the the fact that that is what we're fighting for when it comes being validated as human.
As to Who, let me just say that the moments you speak of and the hope of the 51st century (I've adopted Omnisexual as a label for myself on occaison :-) was really missing in Season 5 (except for River, but she was so few and far between), especially the casual reference to the fact that "hey! queers exsit!". Moffat produced an incredibly heteronormative season, imo.
