Coming home from a social gathering last night, I stopped in Starbucks, and as is not uncommon in a Starbucks, got to observing people, which then led precipitously into my eavesdropping on their conversation, which struck me as bizarre, and in fact probably more bizarre than it was.

The gentleman had bleched blond hair, a bit shaggy and to his collar. He was attractive, with angular features and was in his late forties with worn skin. His mannerisms were excessively languid -- he stood leaning slightly back and his hand gestures seemed to trail after his thoughts. His arms moved with a grace and preicious than spoke of some sort of performance background. His accent took me some time to place, but was clearly Swiss French once I figured out why there was such an edge to it that I wouldn't expect with a regular French accent. He wore a long wool coat that was burnt orange and was just a few inches taller than me.

With him was a Japanese woman, whip thin and taller than him. I'd say early forties, and with the sort of indeterminate European accent that was either fake or spoke to a lifetime of constant travel. Her skin was also worn, and she had the look of someone who used to do a lot of drags in the 80s.

We begin where I tuned in:

M: "...when I had my finger in her mouth when she was dancing behind you."
W: "What?"
M: "I have to make a choice sometime."
W: (whining) "You're evil. Absolutely evil. And disgusting."

The man literally waves her remarks away, and the discussion continues on the same specific point in seemingly endless repetative fashion. And while they weren't _arguing_, clearly neither of them was pleased. When their coffee orders were finally up, he excaimed as the size of his drink, but I couldn't tell if he was positive, negative or sarcastic in his assessment.

All in all, the whole thing was bizarre only because these people were so noticeable, despite being not realy any more outlandish than a wide variety of incredibly annoying New York characters. But they had charisma unfortunately paired with a banal discussion of boring pervert things and it was loud and it was in a Starbucks and it made me love New York.
