A while ago I posted a poll about whether people wanted to go to Snakes Alive! in a fit of (costumed) Harry Potter/Slytherin House madness. And, underestimating that people I know and don't know on the Internet are as insane as I, people, including several from out of town (we're talking Texas), said yes.

So here are the details.

The American Museum of Natural History
Tickets are required, and while they do not technically need to be purchased in advanced, I suggest that you do, as that museum is a mob scene on the weekend.
More information can be obtained and tickets purchased at http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/lizards/
We will be going to the 2:30pm entrance time (we'll gather somewhere nearby at 2pm, I'm still working on that)
Please please please leave anything you think might cause security drama at home, because whether I'm in my Snape clothes or not, I will probably feel at least marginally responsible for any stupidity you lot get up to, and I can assure you that none of us want that.

I will also email this to everyone who responded to the poll (several of whom are not regular readers of this journal), but because of my schedule, that may take a few days to actually happen.

Just for my own edification (specifically, knowing who to be expecting at the meet up point when it is determined and considering possible food venues for after), once you know for sure you are coming, please let me know. Of course, feel free to bring whomever you wish and circulate this far and wide.
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] schpahky for alerting me to the Salon.com response, and the fact that Forbes pulled the piece (and then apparently put it back up in a point-counterpoint format -- via [livejournal.com profile] baldanders).

It includes this fabulous quote from Linda Hirshman:

"Women are not natural slaves, as so many sociobiologists would like us to believe. Ergo, they get harder to bargain with as they get more resources. This is actually good news. If men want doormats, they will have to marry dummies and anticipate dependents. There's a price to acquiring someone willing to take a bad bargain."

Also note:
In this, it resembles the famous Newsweek piece claiming that women over 35 had a better chance of being killed by a terrorist than getting married, a story that was recently recanted 20 years too late.

In a way, I have some dismay at the piece being pulled. Because these view promulgated and unchallenged in channels private or inherently favourable to them, just makes them more dangerous.
