So I've been sitting with this inspiration for my novel thanks to the toy-sailboat lake at Central park for the last 48 hours -- sure I knew how and where I was going to use it and that I just had to plow through this really aggravating scene I've been managing about 100 words on a day and then the next day they'd go to the book version of the lake.
Well, I'm listening to my last.fm station for music that inspires me for the book and I'm realizing the lake is just the most amazing thing ever in the sort of opening scene that makes people keep reading. FUCK. I have _no_ idea how to structure the book to open with anyone visiting this locale.
I do, however, and this is exciting, know exactly how to write a short story about the lake, because then the lake is the central character in it. And I keep saying I must write short stories in the world of the book as an entry point to selling this thing.
Oh, well, hello, lake.
I'm totally excited. And full of dread.
ETA: I take it back. I know exactly how to open with this without having to restructure the whole thing. Rock! And I've been all "write forward only" with myself about this, but I think I do need to go back and write this opening because I think it's exactly what I need to define the world and one of my characters. Happy happy happy. But now I have to go play with swords as opposed to obsess on steampunk vs. magic and dying worlds crap. But oh giggly excited.
