1. Not getting into the bulk of the discussion about Tim Gunn in the previous post as I will just wind up defending my elitism in a potentially ugly way. Maybe later.

However, I will note that there's an interesting power dynamic on the show that the show doesn't seem to be clued into. This is that people respond to Gunn as a friendly but stern authority figure who they feel really really good about making the decisions -- not because they agree with the decisions, but having someone else be the brain just feels good sometimes. Okay, everyone gets that. But then! Gunn gets frustrated with them they don't start getting enthusiastic, making choices for themselves and asserting their own style right away.

Dear Tim,

They are loving your dominant attentions and don't want to slip out from under them too quickly. Your demeanor has gotten you this show, understand that this is what comes with it and don't blame the emotional wrecks your casting people choose for the program! These folks need more tools than the ten essentials and some random references to self-esteem.

Signed,

Trust me, I know.

2. As I slowly dig my brain out from being unable to let go of exciting facts such as the headquarters of the Goblin Rebellion of 1612, I have other book ideas percolating in my head. Specifically? A celiac handbook aimed at young teens/tweens, since that's the age when most kids are making a lot of food decisions on their own and facing a lot of ridicule about being different in habit or appearance (and celiac often makes you both!). It's still percolating in a vague way.

3. Alison is here!

4. My stupid landlord still hasn't deposited the additional security deposit they needed with the rent increase, but since I sent it all certified and I know I got it and we haven't heard anything bad, I'm just sort of assuming this is one of those things that doesn't happen promptly and sanely in that office. I mean, it's been about two weeks. That's not AWFUL.

5. We have an advance screening for Elizabeth: The Golden Age before it opens in theaters!!! Dance!
[livejournal.com profile] beemerbike found the trailer that makes me cry and cry and cry:

I want to talk and talk about it, but don't know the words for not sounding foolish about it. Other than when I watch this trailer, which is a masterwork of music and editing and manipulation, it makes me feel in its duration not only as if my own life is somehow on so epic a stage, but as if I feel and live with its same intensity at every moment of every day, even if saying such a thing is melodrama, foolishness or just simply incorrect. It is epic and ferocious, and for some reason unknown, tells me I am too.
