127 Hours?

So I need to watch stuff for SAG Awards voting.

But...

127 Hours ...

It's not a gore squick. But about the only stuff I can't watch (which is why I still haven't seen that movie I wanted to see about the clone kids) is medical stuff that's presented as punishment/fetishization.

Or rather, it's not that I can't watch it. It's that it makes me not okay. For like days. Weeks. Even when it's the right choice in the art in question.

(see: the Valerie's Letter part of the V for Vendetta film. It's 6 or so minutes of PERFECT filmmaking. I'd be regretful if I'd hadn't watched it. But even thinking of it makes me feel in my head a way I don't know how to describe to you, but it's super fucking unpleasant -- if you've read posts I've made in the past (that are locked now) about my medicalized childhood this makes slightly more sense

other examples of what I can't take: that experimentation scene in Being Human).

Anyway, should I watch 127 Hours or not? I figure since the dude's alone, I'm probably okay. But cameras can be as punishing as other characters.

  • LfT: The Country of Yes. (Please, if you wish to comment on that, please do it there if you can (open ID works!); other comments here).

  • I have such a great collection of stuff coming for this Friday's trash day.

  • My SJA DVDs arrived!

  • I have actually reached, for only the second point in my life, the point where I have to turn off the news (the first time was during Katrina). It's good that I almost never reach this point, because the news is central to one of the things I do. But then Palin said "blood libel" and now I've gone and lost my last shreds of rationality.

  • Heating oil achieved!

  • There really are no cabs at 4pm. I didn't even know anyone thought this was an urban legend. Of course it's true!

  • My neighborhood has lost one of its greats: Bobby Robinson was 93.

  • Haiti: One Year Later.

  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan isn't white. And she's rightfully furious that Elle decided she should be. I hope she sues the fuckers. Meanwhile, there's a petition.

  • Maybe the real danger in US politics right now isn't the violent rhetoric, but the othering. As someone who doesn't get to be human a lot of the time, there's a lot of interesting in this.
  • Someone else on my friends list did a poll, and I realized that I was also curious and have enough people here to get a large sample even if it's not a scientific one.

Since my big discovery of today was that lots of people didn't realize that the "blood libel" thing was a totally anti-semitic thing to say and I was surprised by that, the question becomes is this one of those things _every_ Jewish person knows but non-Jews may not have encountered?

ETA: Comments filled with fascinating anecdata. Have fun.

For those of you who still haven't caught up with this, Boing Boing explains.
