LfT

I cannot stop with the death/mourning stuff and fandom.

I really need to write a book.

Commenting here so I can use this icon. Luminosity. Yes. That is the exact right word. Thank you.

I wonder if this is a phenomenon with Gossip Girl or 90210 or other high school shows that play a bit darker than Glee - it's not just about high school, but about that musical sensibility.

I think part of what drew me to Klaine's arc in general, and what makes me write Blaine a bit more quiet and sad, is that there's this optimistic musical worldview in Glee covering a lot of underlying darkness - a lot of the characters will never leave Lima, they'll get stuck in the same loop that Will and his ex-wife and even Sue got caught in, or they won't achieve the dreams that high school instills in you, or someone like Kurt will have to fight forever to be who he is but in a less intense and more adult way. We get hints of that in the narrative but really a lot of it is subtextual (and USED to be intentional, no idea what Glee thinks it's doing with its own tone now). Dalton's arc IMO kind of started with that tone altogether, there were a lot of subtler things going on and you didn't always know what everyone else was thinking. (Canniblaine's partly that subdued WASP-y prep school thing and how Blaine's wise owl thing was so deeply performative, we had NO idea who he was at first and didn't get that lighter side until later).

Anyway, you couple these really well-drawn characters with what a glitterbomb is going on around them, then add those hints of deeper things (especially with a character like Kurt that often plays more serious), it's almost asking to be shaken up. There's a lot of "and then the zombies invade" darkfic circling around too.
