NY marriage equality
Jun. 24th, 2011 09:34 pmThe vote is expected to come in the next hour and a half.
This was, I realized just now in talking to Patty, sort of my first gay rights issue that wasn't AIDS-related. Back in 1990/1991. TWENTY YEARS AGO. OKAY, TWENTY FUCKING YEARS AGO.
But this was also something I never thought I'd see. So many of the people who taught me what it means to be gay aren't here for this.
This thing, that of course, may not even happen. But we really, really think it's going to. There are crowds out all over the city watching -- in Times Square and where the Stonewall Riots happened.
And NY is only one state, but it will double the number of people living in states with marriage equality. We also have no residency requirement for marriage, so we become a destination for more people from other places.
I'm only going to get less coherent.
So yeah. YOU GUYS.

Date: 2011-06-25 03:19 am (UTC)Yeah, I wish everyone could see this, but it was made to happen by the people who aren't here any more, too. Even I and my marriage-reform agenda are totally thrilled.

Date: 2011-06-25 03:50 am (UTC)I never thought I'd hear a room full of family therapists erupt in screams of joy when a gay marriage bill went through, but that's exactly what happened when there was a pause and they announced it. I'm really glad I found a bunch of social justice fanatics to be part of my professional world. It was heartening as hell.

Date: 2011-06-25 03:55 am (UTC)I am just SO thrilled. I lived in NY for over two years, my mom grew up in the Bronx, and have a lot of friends and de facto family there. I mean, this shouldn't be a big deal. This shouldn't even be an issue. It should have been legal all along. But it hasn't been and NY is a huge state and the fact that this is LEGISLATED? That's really something. It really is. For as crazy as the New York State government is, they done good tonight.
Sooooooooooooo much love to everyone in NY tonight. And everywhere that DOESN'T have equal marriage rights yet, even more love to you. I hope this gives you hope that this is just a step on the road to inevitable equality nationally.

Date: 2011-06-25 03:59 am (UTC)Congratulations of living in a state that is more civilized and humane than it was a few hours ago. As I just saw on someone else's LJ, as of now, one in 9 people in the US live in a state with marriage equality. If the courts overturn the CA bigot-bill, this number will rise to 1 in 5.

Date: 2011-06-25 05:00 am (UTC)I was born in NYC, and even though I don't live there now, it feels really good to know that I could get married to whomever I want in the place I was born.
