Going through reading this as I find time; just finished reading "Romancing the Genre." I can remember a time when my exposure to the romance genre consisted of seeing the covers of my grandmother's extensive collection of Barbara Cartland novels. Years later, A. introduced me to Jude Deveraux's "Velvet" series (medieval historical romance) and showed me how big the genre is. Since then, romances have formed a fairly regular part of my reading diet. Sure they can be trite and formulaic, can't you say that of any genre fiction? Sturgeon's law still applies, but the other 10% make it all worthwhile.
