Good riding lesson today. Sham seems to be the horse I'm comfy with, big tall beastie that he is. Hell, I wanted majestic. I get majestic. Next week we return to the posting trot issue, as opposed to today where we looked at the posting and the trot seperately. Meanwhile, I'm buying riding pants this week, because I'm a tought cookie, but jeans, seams and my delicate bits -- we've reached my tolerance level for that shit. Anyway, I am so sweaty and gross. Bleh.

Also got a call from the stage combat people so I'll be starting that up on the 19th, which is cool. My parents are as per usual unamused, and my mother explained that while she doesn't want me to be a wimp she really wouldn't mind if I were a coward. The family is nothing if not nuanced. And my father is concerned I'm not writing enough, which I think is subtext for him saying, "that, I know you can succeed at." I'm sorta of irritated, but all I can do is work my ass off and ignore the subtext I suppose.

Vanity Fair again tonight with people.

I saw this movie this weekend and was rather surprised at how uneven it was. I, like you, enjoyed the music and it was lovely to look at, especially the colors. JRM's role was quite underdeveloped. It was like they were trying to do too much at once. Screen adapation is not a pretty job, you never quite know if you got the best pieces in the right parts.

I loved the dance scenes and Gabriel Bryne (sp?). It has been a long time since I have seen him play such a predator in civilized clothing.

Let me know what you think the second time around

The unevenness was more pronounced but bothered me less because I was prepared. The best moment of pacing in the entire film is when the call to war sounds while they're at the ball -- when the men rush through the dancers -- it's just got this breathtaking, frightening energy that the rest of the film lacks -- which is a predictable flaw of period pieces, but I don't believe it's necessary.

I still love the music, but far more so out of context than in it (I've found the soundtrack to be a perfect companion for my current reading of the HH novels).

I noticed a fascinating costuming detail, which is that Becky often wears large necklaces made of prominent over-sized chain lins -- and is the only woman in the film to do so.

Purefoy still blows me away. No, he doesn't have anything taxing to do, but he does it so truthfully....

It's hard to like a film where nearly everyone is loathesome or stupid.

Much of the best casting in the film is in the small roles (the women of the Styne household for example).

The India stuff works for me, but it seems not for anyone else. Certainly the final song in the film consistantly moves me to tears, not out of any particular feeling for Becky, but because it's so emotionaly evocative of a joyful moment on a precipe where you can throw your old life away or relive it again.

I still think the device of her trunk is brilliant.

For all its flaws, it's still niggling at me, and not in a "what it could have been way" so much as all the corners I can't help mentally exploring. Which of course is the route of all fanfiction. I've got a billion bunnies off this fucking thing, and I've been beating them off with a stick, increasingly unsuccessfully.
