I remember a school play from - oh, first or second grade? - in which all the girls vied to be the princess, and I knew I'd never get to be the princess, but I had to try, and perhaps at least get to be the queen, or maybe the dragon, although the boys always got to do fun stuff like that. I remember being terribly dissapointed that I failed to get a "good" part, and horrified that the part I did get was that of the knight's grandmother, a creaky cranky old lady of some sort of humorous value. I remember next to nothing about the play itself, but my mother recalls with motherly fondness that I did a surprisingly god job of character-acting for such a small child, nearly stole the show, and also overdid my nagging of the heroic knight, to the point of actually whacking him with the umbrella I was only supposed to be waving around.
My Mikado-version was one that PBS used to show periodically; I think it may have been a D'Oyly Carte version, although I couldn't swear to it. The costuming was sort of British-summer-Brighton-in-the-forties, with the Prince in a seersucker suit, Yum-yum in a schoolgirlish, almost Alice-esque dress, and lots of pastels and the like, but with Asian-influenced makeup. The court were largely in black suits, rolled umbrellas, and bowler hats, although I think Ko-ko may have worn pinstripes.
I rather like the image of you-now as Ko-ko, in pinstripe drag and Bowie-esque Kabuki-ish makeup, singing "I've Got a Little List". I will never have the soprano range to do "The Sun" justice, but I'm singing along with the rest of the play right now, annoying the boyfriend.
