airfare stuff

So, it's time to buy my ticket. In shopping around for the best fair I made the freakish discovery that I can get a cheaper fare via hotwire.com than I can using priceline's name your own price. In light of this -- are there any other secrets of a cheap flight I'm missing out on? Right now, it seems that it will come in just under $1100, which I know is a great deal. I also know I saw better last year (although oil wasn't through the roof then).

I've had good luck getting tickets with:

www.ORBITZ.com
www.discountfares.com

when I was with Sabre there were a LOT of Hotwire fans in my department (Air Pricing Operations). That's probably your best bet.

I like the way they operate far better than priceline in that they will actually show you an itinerary and give you time to think about it (maybe a day) instead of keeping all that secret until you PAY, ala how priceline seems to operate.

A good practice however, on any ticket you purchase well in advance, is to check back regularly. Not sure how a hotwire ticket would work, but a 'regular' ticket if the price drops AND the same fare 'class' is available, you can get reticketed and get a refund of the difference. Usually.
