Dec. 12th, 2004 08:18 pmSo it's been an LJ sort of weekend. Right now I'm enjoying the benefits of the very helpful people over at
sydneysiders, and it's good to see that they're less hostile than everyone in all the NYC communities (granted, I am one of the hostile people in the NYC communities, mainly for the lack of specificity in most people's questions).
Saw
schpahky last night, and it was really lovely and engaging, even with the occassional awkward pauses of two people who are just getting to know each other. At times we devolved (as women do) into cattiness and (as cat-owners do) into "it's so cute when my cat does this really gross thing!" But it was most excellent.
Why is flipping channels on the TV often more compelling than putting something on that's actually good?
I sort of rediscovered Lord of the Rings over the weekend too.
schpahky mentioned she'd never seen it, and I went off on why it's great and in the process reminded myself of why it's so special on so many levels (my roommate points out that movies rarely have great production values, great source material and that actor camraderie stuff that makes both for a better movie and greater interest in the process of the film as well). And one of those levels is so much about the random timing with which it came into the world. When Gandalf says "So do all who live in such times...." -- in that December it was like learning how to breathe again, or more accurately, realizing you'd forgotten. At the end of the day though, aside from being about goodness, they are about the weird inexorable nature of change and how it can often be necessary, even if not good. The extended editions capture this more effectively in some ways... with the little details about the elves leaving and all. Anyway -- then after she left the first one was on TV, and I got to be blown away yet again by so much of the acting in it (in the first one, mainly Sean Bean and Elijah Wood).
Saw Kat briefy today, but that was more about her family helping rescue me from some of the current drama and her being in the throes of a paper. Hopefully we'll be able to have some weird intellectual nerdy nerdy hillarity soon.
