There's another version of that which is about a female sailor. Someone gave me a recording of it years ago (which has since been lost, dang it, and I have no idea who sang it) but one of the lyric fragments was "run the rigging again."

Excellent and wonderful, I would dearly love to read such a thing. I greatly enjoy the Steeleye Span version and I am also quite fascinated by this topic. I remember reading several accounts of young women dressing up as men and fighting in the Revolutionary War (and in later wars) in Gay American History: Lesbians and Gay Men in the U.S.A.
