anxieties

My father emailed to say I received a jury duty notice at my parents' house, which among other things makes more sense. He doesn't know what to do with it, and I'm scared that if I have to report while I'm out of the country it's going to be some sort of horrible problem. I can't be arrested/fined if I'm on vacation and can't report to a notice received while I'm away, can I? Either way, jury duty is a nightmare since I only make money when I work. Oi. Speaking of which I just emailed them about that. Talk about anxieties I don't need.

Add to that a very tough day in studio (the Scottish play), my giving myself shit and all that usual about a slightly surreal myriad of things, and I'm not in the best place right now. Going to go swimming in a bit and try yet another cafe in Darlinghurst.

I don't know what your county's like in this regard, but I was able to get the student "get out of jury duty" card taken care of online with the information on the card I had. You might try to see if you can do something similar.

you can defer your service. depending on which court it is, there are different ways to do it. most simply require a phone call (at least one is automated, by my recollection) and the info is on the summons card.

i'd imagine you could instruct your parents to call and make the 1st deferment for the maximum time. I think you can find more info at http://www.nyjuror.org

I know here, the county offers inline impaneling which has the exemptions and whatnot. I would find a way to contact the office, and explain the situation to them.

New York has almost no exemptions from jury service. Basically, if you're not a convicted felon and you're still breathing, you're eligible.

When you get a jury summons, you can get a deferment, usually by phone or mail. Your first request to defer will be granted, no questions asked, no reason needed. Have your parents check the date: if necessary, I'm sure they can take care of it for you.

They checked the date (the 4th) but mailed it back to them anyway
since i don't live ther and may be in the system twice since i am
registered to vote at my own actual address.

Between the wrong address and the being out of state at school, they'll grant you a deferment. My dad handled that for at least two of us while we were in college. I also asked for a deferment for work reasons once after I moved here. They never recalled me, so I really don't think it's a big deal. And as slow as they are with paperwork, it won't have gotten anywhere bad before you get back if there is an issue anyway.

Glad you enjoyed the swimming.
