Makiko!

Makiko is from Japan, learned English to come to NIDA and really had a massive struggle with the language, so communicating with her was often funny and surreal, especially when she would confuse words like "frying" and "flying" or "abortion" and "adoption" -- she was consistently good-humoured about it and would freak out whenever anyone could explain anything to her with a tiny amount of Japanese (I think I managed to use the words "kampai", "ebi" and "mono no aware" to help communicate at various points and she loved it). Last night as she got out of Trisha's car (she was dropping a bunch of us off at our locations), she hugged me and said "Have a good fright! Have a good fright!". She meant "flight" of course, and the "r" and "l" seperation is very hard for those from Japan (just as we can't easily make the "lri" sound), but it's exactly what happens at a moment in Lost in Translation and it was just really sort of perfect, because I think we all (even most of the Australians in my class were not from Sydney) felt profoundly displaced in a really odd bitter-sweet way by the end of it. Sometimes we would all just sit around and exclaim words we knew everyone would recognize, so there was this weird moment driving around Ultimo where everyone in the car was shouting "Pikachou!"

More random Darlinghurst

Tewkesbury Lane (spelling on that is debateable)


Liverpool btwn Darlinghurst and Darley -- this may be one of my favourite pics I've taken, although at least from the looks of it on this monitor I may need to tweak the colors a bit.


Liverpool and whatever the fuck the street past Darley is (I've spaced it as I almost got hit by a car taking this one, which issn't that great but I like the light and the angle of the street sign)

Randomly, since there's so much Japanese shtuff flailing throughout my life of late, I love the words of communication between you and Makiko -- for some reason it seems to perfectly sum up all the weirdness and rightness in translation. I don't know, I'm not being articulate as I want to be, but it's the combination of those words that makes me grin. That's all.

Do you know what Power Puff Girls is called in Japan btw -- we were trying to talk to her about it, but couldn't come up with the name she would recognize.
