As many of you know a ban on gay marriage was found illegal in New York State today. Despite this happening in a court named the state supreme court it can still be appealed within the state, and probably will be, but it's an important first step to what will likely be an outcome similar to that in Massachusetts.

Apparently gay marriage has also been declared legal here in NYC or so someone said they just heard on NPR. Truthfully, I'm a little behind.

All of that aside, you should read this though: http://www.livejournal.com/users/catelin/179683.html

I don't know about the declared legal, but there is no law on the books, in NY State, to specifically prohibit it, so a county, or city (depends on how things are done there, and I don't know) could, in theory, grant legal licenses (unlike Calif. where the City of SF granted licenses, which were in contravention of state law) and they ought to be binding.
