Interesting.

I always presumed as a child that part of the reason my parents didn't like me much was because I was ugly.

Given that being an unattractive adult has already been proven to be a serious barrier to social and career success, this hardly seems surprising.

I noticed a radical difference in attitude when my best friend's second baby was born ... she was very noisy and clingy, and not nearly as "cute" as her brother, and the mother was clearly very annoyed by her and not anywhere near as doting as she had been with her first.

I'll buy that. I think it could also be argued that if average-looking or less attractive children get less attention, they get less opportunity to develop of repertoire of attachment-promoting social behaviors to compensate for the perceived deficits in their looks. If you're intelligent as well and so less likely to be quiet and obedient, it's often 'three strikes, you're out.'

I was an unattractive kid and I was loved like crazy. {shrug}
